Highlights
  • Miradouro do Cristo Rei do Garajau - Nestled in one of Madeira’s most surprising locations, the Christ the King of Garajau statue stands as a prominent monument on the island’s east coast. It’s a must-see spot that enchants visitors with its unique scenic backdrop. The statue was erected in honor of the Sacred Heart of Jesus and is situated at the viewpoint overlooking Ponta do Garajau in Santa Cruz. Financed and built by Aires de Ornelas, the son of the last morgado of Caniço, it was inaugurated on October 30, 1927, coinciding with the opening of the road connecting Cancela to the monument. - Pico do Facho viewpoint - Overlooking the Machico valley, the Pico do Facho Viewpoint offers visitors a breathtaking panoramic view. It’s one of the best spots to take in the beauty of Madeira’s east coast. This viewpoint is located on a path that ascends to the summit of Pico do Facho before reaching the Caniçal tunnel. Historically significant, large bonfires were once lit here to warn the population of approaching enemy ships. - Ponta de Sao Lourenco - This 3 km trail (plus 3 km return) takes you to the eastern tip of the island, offering panoramic views of both the north and south sides. Of medium difficulty and expected to take 2h30, the PR 8 Vereda da Ponta de São Lourenço runs along the peninsula of the same name. Despite its undulating terrain, the well-maintained path provides a pleasant walking experience. The peninsula, of volcanic origin and mostly basalt, also features some limestone sediment formations. Along the way, you’ll encounter two islets: Ilhéu do Desembarcadouro and Ilhéu do Farol. - Miradouro do guindaste - Perched on one of the slopes at the mouth of Ribeira do Faial in Santana, the Guindaste viewpoint offers a stunning view of Madeira’s north coast. It’s the perfect spot to admire the beauty of the Atlantic Ocean that surrounds the island. - Santana - The “little houses of Santana” are iconic for their unique architectural style, known nationally and beyond. With their triangular shape and thatched roofs, they are the most recognizable symbol of this municipality on Madeira’s north coast. These traditional houses reflect the area’s historical isolation, which made it difficult to access by land and sea for a long time. This isolation helped preserve unique cultural traits, now a valuable heritage for the municipality, which has around 8800 inhabitants. - Arco de Sao Jorge - The distinctive features of Madeira’s north coast are evident in its beaches and bathing complexes, where lush green mountains descend to the sea. The Calhau de São Jorge Bathing Complex in Santana, located at the mouth of the São Jorge river, offers a small beach with stunning scenery, perfect for a day at the beach. - Sao Vicente - Traveling along the coastal road near the São Vicente tunnel, you’ll encounter the magnificent Água d’Alto waterfall in the island’s north. Madeira has much more to offer. - Miradouro do Veu da Noiva - Situated on the old road connecting São Vicente and Seixal, this is one of the most iconic and frequently shared spots on Madeira’s north coast. The Véu da Noiva Waterfall, visible from the viewpoint, is a sight to behold. The waterfall, named for its height and abundant water flow, resembles a bridal veil and contrasts beautifully with the lush surroundings. - Praia de Seixal - On Madeira’s north coast lies Seixal beach, a place of unique beauty. Known as Porto de Abrigo do Seixal beach, it is a living postcard, attracting sea, nature, and photography enthusiasts. The landscape features black sand, the Atlantic Ocean, and verdant cliffs, creating a serene atmosphere for visitors. - Ribeira da Janela - Madeira’s north coast boasts dramatic mountainous scenery, where green slopes meet the clear blue Atlantic. The Ribeira da Janela viewpoint, located at the top of the Ribeira da Janela parish in Eira da Achada, offers views of Seixal, São Vicente, and Ponta Delgada. The rugged coastline adds to the picturesque setting. Inaugurated in 2009, the viewpoint includes facilities for tourists and locals, such as restrooms, children’s areas, picnic spots, and parking. - Porto Moniz Natural Swimming Pools - Porto Moniz, in the far north of Madeira, offers some of the region’s most stunning views. The area is characterized by the Laurissilva forest, which meets the northern sea through cliffs and coves. The sea has always been vital to Porto Moniz, historically supporting the local economy through fishing. This connection is celebrated annually during “Porto Moniz Sea Week,” the largest cultural, recreational, and sporting event in the area.
