Amalfi - As Italy’s oldest maritime republic and a symbol of the Amalfi Coast, Amalfi continues to captivate visitors just as it did during the Grand Tour era. Spanning just over three square kilometers, this breathtaking town is located at the mouth of the Valle dei Mulini. Amalfi fans out towards the sea, protected by the steep slopes of the Monti Lattari. The town’s ancient Roman roots are visible in several ruins, including a nymphaeum from Emperor Tiberius’s reign. Amalfi, the oldest of Italy’s four major Maritime Republics, thrived for three centuries under the Normans, Longobards, and Saracens. Its decline began in 1137 when it was defeated and plundered by the rival republic of Pisa.

Ravello - Ravello was established in the 5th century as a refuge from the barbarian invasions that marked the fall of the Western Roman Empire. By the 9th century, Ravello had become a significant town within the maritime Republic of Amalfi. It was known for producing wool from the surrounding countryside, which was dyed in the town, and was a key trading power in the Mediterranean between 839 and around 1200.

Recognized as a remarkable representation of the Mediterranean landscape by Unesco, the Amalfi Coast is one of Italy’s unforgettable sights. Here, towering cliffs dive into the sea, resulting in a heart-stopping vertical panorama of steep cliffs, houses clinging to edges, and green forests. The region is host to the high-society favorite Positano, an area marked by its pastel-colored collection of trendy boutiques, adventurers sipping spritz cocktails, and sunbathers basking in the warmth. Moving eastwards, the age-old Amalfi captivates visitors with its mosque-inspired Norman cathedral. On the western side, we find Sorrento, the entrance to the Amalfi Coast, a stunning resort resting on a cliff, which has defied the odds by surviving the wave of mainstream tourism. Other than the captivating views of the blue seas and picturesque squares, the region boasts some of Italy’s best hotels and eateries. Additionally, it is one of the best places for hiking in the country, with well-signposted trails giving an opportunity to explore beyond the crowd of the famous coastal areas.
