Telč is renowned for having one of the most stunning town squares in the Czech Republic, and possibly all of Central Europe. The square features a Baroque Marian column and two fountains at its center, surrounded by historically significant arcaded townhouses. In 1963, Vojtěch Jasný filmed “The Cassandra Cat” in Telč, and in 1979, Werner Herzog shot “Woyzeck” there. Several Czech fairy tale films, including “The Proud Princess” (1952) and “Z pekla štěstí” (1999), were filmed at Telč Castle.

State Chateau Telc (Statni zamek Telc) - This Gothic castle was constructed in the latter half of the 14th century. By the end of the 15th century, the fortifications were enhanced, and a new gate-tower was erected. In the mid-16th century, Renaissance nobleman Zachariáš of Hradec transformed the medieval castle to suit Renaissance tastes, adding new vaulting to the ground floor, sgraffito to the façade, and stucco ornamentation along with trompe-l’œil and chiaroscuro paintings to the state apartments and living quarters in 1553. The Jesuits arrived during the Counter-Reformation, building the Church of the Name of Jesus in 1666–67, designed by Domenico Orsi. The Virgin column and the fountain in the square’s center date back to the 18th century.
-
Plague Column - The Marian (Plague) Column is located in the upper part of the square. Constructed between 1716 and 1720 from the legacy of townswoman Zuzana Hodová, who donated 1000 gold pieces, the column was created by sculptor David Lipart of Brtnice and his assistant František Neuwirt. The pedestal features saints such as John of Nepomuk, James, Francis Xaverius, Rochus, Sebastian, and the Guardian Angel. In the cave, St. Rosalie and Mary Magdalene can be seen. Atop the greyish column stands the Virgin Mary on the globe.

Rozhledna Telc - This watchtower is about a mile’s walk from the town center and offers unique views of the town not visible from the town towers. A small fee of 50 CZK is required.

Trebic - Třebíč is a town in the Moravian part of the Vysočina Region in the Czech Republic, serving as a regional center with a population of around 36,000. It is the administrative capital of the Třebíč District. During its expansion, Třebíč was the third most important town in Moravia, with population growth accelerating after World War II. The town is home to several notable tourist attractions, including the Jewish Quarter and St. Procopius Basilica, both listed as UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
-
The Jewish Quarter and St Procopius’ Basilica in Trebic - The Jewish Quarter is one of Europe’s best-preserved Jewish ghettos, earning a place on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2003, alongside the Jewish Cemetery and St. Procopius Basilica in Třebíč. It is the only Jewish monument outside Israel specifically included on the List. Located on the north bank of the River Jihlava, the Jewish Quarter is surrounded by rocks and the river. It contains 123 houses, two synagogues, and a Jewish cemetery outside the town area. During World War II, all original Jewish residents were deported and murdered in concentration camps by the Nazis, with only ten returning after the war. Consequently, many buildings, such as the town hall, rabbi’s office, hospital, poorhouse, and school, no longer serve their original purposes and are now owned by non-Jewish individuals.

The Jewish Quarter and St Procopius’ Basilica in Trebic - St. Procopius Basilica is a Romanesque-Gothic Christian church built on the site of the original Virgin Mary’s Chapel of the Benedictine monastery between 1240 and 1280. It became a national cultural monument in 2002 as part of the “monastery with St. Procopius church.” The basilica, along with the Jewish Quarter in Třebíč, was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2003. Initially dedicated to the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, Saint Procopius became the basilica’s patron saint on the quincentenary of his canonization in 1704. Jan Karel, Count of Valdštejn, established a castle chapel of St. Procopius from the basilica’s presbytery. As of 2013, the renovated Třebíč castle is a museum adjacent to the Basilica.
-
Třebíč Castle - The entire building underwent reconstruction for the first time, creating space for four thematically independent exhibitions focusing on topics related to Třebíč and the surrounding region. These include the mineralogical exhibition “The World of Inanimate Nature,” the monastery exhibition “The World of Portals and Gates,” the castle tour “The Waldstein Family at Třebíč,” and the museum exhibition “People. Places. Destinies.” In addition to tours offering deeper insights into the region and the museum’s collections, visitors can attend short-term exhibitions in the former castle stables, as well as concerts and lectures in the Stone Hall. Educational programs are regularly prepared for schools, incorporating modern technologies in both the exhibitions and a multi-function hall and study. The reconstruction also made the premises fully accessible to disabled visitors.
