Plzeň serves as a hub for commerce in the Czech Republic’s western region. The city has seen a significant increase in foreign investment since the late ‘90s. Among these investments is the Pilsen Plaza, a large shopping and entertainment complex that sprawls across 20,000 square metres (220,000 square feet), which was opened by Israeli mall developer, Plaza Centers, in 2007. It includes a multiplex cinema owned by Cinema City Czech Republic. Despite accounting for only 29.8% of its regional population, Plzeň is responsible for generating around two-thirds of the Plzeň Region’s GDP. Given these statistics, Plzeň has a collective GDP of around $7.2 billion and a per capita GDP of $44,000, making it one of the wealthiest cities in the country. An explanation for this prosperity can partially be credited to the commuting population to the city. Founded in 1859 in Plzeň, the Škoda company, a significant figure in Austro-Hungarian, Czechoslovakian and Czech engineering, and a major European arms manufacturer, also contributes to the city’s economy.
