The Almourol Castle is among the most unique Portuguese castles due to its significant historical roots and stunning landscape. It reflects the Portuguese territory’s reclamation during the Middle Ages.
The medieval and fortified city of Óbidos, decorated with white houses decked in bougainvilleas and honeysuckle, was seized from the Moors by the first king of Portugal, D. Afonso Henriques, in 1148. It was later gifted to his wife, Queen Santa Isabel by D. Dinis. Thereafter, until 1883, the town of Óbidos remained the property of the queens of Portugal.
