- Red Forest - A truly distinctive area within the Chernobyl zone, where the impact of radiation on living organisms can still be seen today.
- Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant - The “heart” of the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone.
During a project test, an explosion occurred that completely destroyed the reactor at approximately 1:24 am on April 26, 1986. The radiation released from the explosion was equivalent to 500 atomic bombs like the one dropped on Hiroshima in 1945. The spread of radioactive material was so extensive that radioactive rain fell across Europe, reaching as far as Ireland. Various sources report that between 600,000 to 800,000 people from across the USSR participated in the aftermath efforts.
