Stopping location: Batalha, Batalha, Leiria District, Portugal
Batalha is a Portuguese village in the district of Leiria, in the province of Beira Litoral, Central Portugal. On August 14, 1385, the Portuguese king D. João I defeated the Castilian troops at Aljubarrota, securing Portugal’s independence from the expansionist ambitions of the opposing king, João I of Castile. To commemorate this victory, the Master of Aviz commissioned the construction of the Monastery of Santa Maria da Vitória, 4 km from the battle site. The Monastery’s construction made the town a center for architectural studies from 1540 onwards and even a real school of architecture in the 17th and 18th centuries. The small town of Batalha developed around the monument, along Rua Direita and a square, where the pillory was located. The spacious atrium next to the Monastery complex is a result of the extensive demolition of 18th and 19th-century houses in the 1940s.
