This tour definitely takes you “off the beaten path” from typical tourist spots. The Abbey of Montecassino is among the most renowned abbeys globally. In 529, Saint Benedict selected this mountain to establish his monastery. In February 1944, the Abbey was nearly leveled by a bombardment. According to legend, when Jesus died on the cross, the temple veil in Jerusalem was torn, creating three deep fissures in the rock now known as the Split Mountain of Gaeta. Atop this promontory is the Sanctuary of the SS. Trinity. To the left of the church, one of these fissures leads to the Turk’s Cave, a pilgrimage site and captivating tourist attraction, associated with various stories and notable figures.
