Exploring Ourense: A Family’s Journey Through History and Flavor
Eager to explore the rich history and vibrant culture of Ourense, I embarked on a family-friendly adventure through its historic streets, savoring local flavors and uncovering hidden gems.
Discovering Ourense: A Family Adventure
Our journey began in the heart of Ourense, at the charming Plaza Mayor. This square, with its unique sloping ground, immediately captured the kids’ imaginations. They giggled as they tried to balance on the uneven surface, turning it into an impromptu game. The square’s vibrant atmosphere, with locals chatting and children playing, set the perfect tone for our day of exploration.
We wandered through the historic center, where the Iglesia De Santa Maria Madre stood as a testament to the city’s rich history. The kids were fascinated by the stories of the original cathedral that once stood there. Our guide was wonderful, weaving tales of the past that kept even the youngest of my three engaged. As we strolled through Praza Correxidor, I couldn’t help but appreciate how the modern buildings still held whispers of the past, a perfect blend of old and new.
A Taste of Ourense
No family adventure is complete without indulging in local flavors, and Ourense did not disappoint. We ventured into the wine area, known for its tapas, and the kids were thrilled to try new dishes. The variety of flavors was a delight, and I was grateful for the family-friendly atmosphere of the eateries. The staff were welcoming, offering smaller portions for the kids and even sharing stories about the dishes’ origins.
Our next stop was the Praza do Ferro, a historic crossroads where markets once thrived. The kids were intrigued by the idea of a bustling market selling farming utensils and pots. It was a great opportunity to teach them about the importance of markets in community life, and they enjoyed imagining what it would have been like centuries ago.
A Cathedral and a Market
The highlight of our tour was undoubtedly the Catedral de Ourense. Its grandeur was awe-inspiring, and the guide’s explanations brought the history to life. The kids were particularly taken with the intricate details of the architecture, and I loved seeing their curiosity sparked by such a magnificent structure.
We concluded our tour at the Praza Abastos, a market that has been a cornerstone of Galician gastronomy since 1924. The vibrant stalls, filled with fresh produce and local delicacies, were a feast for the senses. The kids enjoyed picking out fruits and learning about different ingredients, making it a fun and educational experience.
Our day in Ourense was a perfect blend of history, culture, and family fun. The city’s welcoming atmosphere and rich heritage made it an ideal destination for a family adventure. I left with a heart full of memories and a promise to return, knowing there is still so much more to explore.
