- Arcibasilica di San Giovanni in Laterano - The final stop is the magnificent Basilica of St. John in Lateran. Crafted by the 17th-century architect Borromini, this expansive and serene location features statues of the apostles along the nave and golden mosaics adorning the apse. It holds the highest significance among Rome’s cathedrals for two reasons: it was the site of the world’s first legal Christian Church and serves as the seat of the Bishop of Rome, who is the Pope. Known as the ‘Head and Mother of all Churches,’ its enormous bronze doors were originally those of the Roman Senate, and the world’s largest and oldest Egyptian obelisk stands outside. Opposite is the Holy Staircase, brought from the Holy Land by Saint Helena, mother of Emperor Constantine, who legalized Christianity. Once ascended by Christ, it is now protected by wood, and pilgrims may only climb it on their knees.
- Basilica Papale San Paolo Fuori le Mura - Saint Paul’s Outside the Walls was constructed over the tomb of Saint Paul of Tarsus, who was martyred in the same area. A devastating fire in the 1800s destroyed 90% of the vast marble basilica, leading to its reconstruction along the original dimensions with marble and financial contributions from Egypt, Russia, and Greece. It features a tranquil cloister for quiet reflection before entering the nave, which is lined with 80 columns and portraits of every pope since St. Peter. The Baldachin of porphyry stone covers the altar and Saint Paul’s grave below, and a giant marble Easter candle from the 13th century, which survived the fire, stands prominently. A massive, solid gold mosaic of Christ crowns the basilica. Outside, visitors can find a Vatican post office, souvenir shop, and a café for refreshments before heading back to the city center.
- Santa Maria Maggiore - Meet the guide at Saint Mary Major, a 5th-century basilica renowned for its breathtaking 13th-century golden Byzantine mosaics, the tallest bell tower in Rome, and the tombs of Paulina Borghese, sister of Napoleon, and the Baroque genius Bernini. A relic of the Holy Manger is housed in a porphyry casket beneath the altar, and the ceiling is said to be made of Inca gold donated by the Spanish Monarchs Ferdinand and Isabella. Exclusive ticketed access to the Papal Loggia is also available.
