Discovering Calabrian Traditions: A Day in Zungri
Our family journey to Zungri in Calabria promised a blend of cultural exploration and hands-on learning. Join us as we delve into the heart of Calabrian traditions with a bread-making experience and a tour of the ancient Zungri Caves.
A Warm Welcome to Zungri
Our family adventure in the Province of Vibo Valentia began with a visit to the charming village of Zungri, where we were greeted by the warm and welcoming Franca at her family farm. The moment we stepped onto the property, we were enveloped in the genuine hospitality that is characteristic of the Calabrian people. Franca’s smile was infectious, and her enthusiasm set the tone for what would be an unforgettable day.
As a museum curator, I am always on the lookout for experiences that blend education with entertainment, and this traditional bread-making experience did not disappoint. Franca and her family invited us into their world, sharing stories and traditions that have been passed down through generations. It was a unique opportunity for our children to learn about the cultural heritage of Calabria in a hands-on and engaging way.
The Art of Bread Making
The bread-making process was a delightful journey through time. We donned traditional attire and rolled up our sleeves to participate in the age-old ritual of making bread. The children were particularly fascinated by the transformation of simple ingredients—flour, water, and yeast—into the fragrant loaves that would soon grace our table.
Franca’s family guided us through each step, from kneading the dough to shaping it into the perfect loaf. Their patience and expertise were evident, and their passion for preserving this culinary tradition was inspiring. As we worked, we were serenaded by “a massara e u massaru,” who entertained us with songs and stories, adding a lively and authentic touch to the experience.
Exploring the Zungri Caves
After our bread-making adventure, we embarked on a tour of the Zungri Caves, a fascinating rock settlement that offers a glimpse into the region’s ancient past. The caves, with their intricate carvings and historical significance, captivated both the adults and the children. It was a perfect blend of history and exploration, allowing us to delve deeper into the cultural tapestry of Calabria.
The excursion also included a visit to the Museum of Rural and Peasant Civilization, where we admired sculptures and paintings by Maestro Zappino. The museum provided a rich context for understanding the lives of the people who once inhabited the caves, and it was a wonderful complement to our hands-on experience at the farm.
As we returned to Franca’s farm to taste the freshly baked bread, we felt a profound connection to the land and its people. The “pitta forward furnu” was a testament to the skill and dedication of our hosts, and it was the perfect way to conclude our day in Zungri. This experience was not just about making bread; it was about forging connections and creating memories that will last a lifetime.
