Puerto Maldonado: Peru’s Biodiversity Capital
Puerto Maldonado - Upon arrival at the airport or land terminal, you’ll be greeted and transferred to the Monte Amazónico office for registration. If you have large luggage, we recommend repacking to bring only essentials. We’ll then travel by 4x4 vehicle for about 2 hours to reach the banks of the Tambopata River. From there, we’ll take a boat to the “Monte Amazónico - Tambopata” lodge. After a warm welcome and room assignments, lunch will be served. In the afternoon, we’ll embark on an introductory walk through the rainforest, offering a chance to see animals like amphibians, mammals, reptiles, and fascinating insects in their natural habitat.
Macaw Collpa
Chuncho Macaw Clay Lick - We start our day very early at 4:30 AM to visit the world’s largest macaw clay lick, COLLPA CHUNCHO. The journey takes about 1.5 hours by boat, during which we might spot species like capybaras, tapirs, and possibly even jaguars. Many of our guests have captured photos of these magnificent creatures. Upon arrival at the clay lick, we’ll witness hundreds of parrots from various species eating clay from the riverbank. We’ll settle in to watch one of the most stunning natural bird spectacles, as the parrots are joined by three of the most colorful macaw species in America: the red, green, and blue-and-yellow macaws. These birds consume the clay to detoxify and supplement their diet. On an active day, you can see hundreds of these beautiful birds flying overhead—a truly unforgettable experience. Afterward, we’ll return to the lodge for breakfast and some rest.
Next, we’ll take a guided walk through our botanical garden to see local fruit, timber, and medicinal plants. After lunch, we’ll have the chance to kayak on the Tambopata River, moving quietly to increase our chances of spotting the reserve’s largest animals. The evening is free for rest or an optional night walk.
