Puerto Maldonado: Peru’s Biodiversity Capital

Tambopata River - Upon arrival at the airport or bus terminal, you’ll be transferred to Monte Amazónico’s office for registration. If you have large luggage, we recommend repacking to bring only essentials. We’ll then travel by 4x4 for about 2 hours to reach the Tambopata River. From there, we’ll take a boat to the “Monte Amazónico - Tambopata” lodge. After a welcome and room assignment, lunch will be served. In the afternoon, we’ll take an introductory walk through the rainforest, where you can observe animals like amphibians, mammals, reptiles, and fascinating insects in their natural habitat.

Macaw Collpa

Chuncho Macaw Clay Lick - We start our day early at 4:30 AM to visit the world’s largest macaw clay lick, COLLPA CHUNCHO. The boat ride takes about 1.5 hours, during which you might spot species like capybaras, tapirs, and even jaguars. Many guests have captured photos of these magnificent creatures. At the clay lick, you’ll witness hundreds of parrots from various species eating clay from the riverbank. We’ll settle in to watch this spectacular natural bird show, featuring the three most colorful macaw species in America: red, green, and blue-and-yellow macaws. On a good day, you can see hundreds of these birds flying overhead—a truly unforgettable experience. After breakfast, we’ll return to Puerto Maldonado and then take a 1-hour boat ride back to the lodge. After lunch, we’ll visit the “Monkey Island” across the Madre de Dios River, home to various monkey species, including Capuchin monkeys. In the evening, we’ll search for white alligators on the riverbanks of the Madre de Dios River, using flashlights. You might also spot capybaras, the world’s largest rodents, which can weigh up to 60 kilos. We’ll return to the lodge for dinner and rest.

Tambopata National Reserve

Lago Sandoval - After breakfast, we’ll embark on a 3 km walk through dense rainforest to reach Sandoval Lake, home to piranhas and one of the largest lakes in the Tambopata National Reserve. We’ll take a rowing boat to observe a variety of birds and monkeys, including shansho, cormorants, jacanas, puma herons, chickens, cotomonos, monk friars, black machins, pichicos, and sloths. We might even encounter a family of giant otters, which can grow up to two meters long and are endangered, as well as large alligators over 4 meters long. We’ll return to the lodge for a typical lunch. In the evening, we’ll take a walk to observe the diverse species of insects, amphibians, reptiles, and other nocturnal animals. Dinner and rest will follow.

Hanging Bridges

Madre de Dios Region - At 5:30 AM, we’ll take a short walk to the canopy walkway, which is over 30 meters high. This will give us a unique perspective of the rainforest and a panoramic view of the Madre de Dios River. From the platforms, we’ll observe various bird species, such as toucans, macaws, tanagers, and orioles. It will be a wonderful experience. After breakfast, we’ll return to the city and transfer to the airport or bus station.
