Originally founded in 1502, the cathedral was completely destroyed by a fire set by restorers in 1863. It wasn’t fully restored until 1956, with further renovations occurring in 2008. - Fortaleza San Felipe - Strategically located within the historic center of Puerto Plata, La Fortaleza San Felipe was completed in 1577 as part of the colonial military structures designed to form the Caribbean defense system. This strategy was orchestrated by the Spanish crown to protect the newly conquered lands and safeguard marine routes from smuggling, Corsairs, and piracy.
The construction of the Fort faced numerous challenges from the crown and local officials who were uninterested in its completion. Consequently, the Royal Audience of Santo Domingo appointed Francisco Ceballos to begin the work in March 1563, starting with the wall that would protect the Castle. After Ceballos passed away in 1572, Pedro Rengifo de Angulo took over and completed the building in 1577.
