Revving Up in the Dominican

The sun was just beginning to peek over the horizon as I found myself standing outside the gates of Amber Cove, ready for a day of adventure. The air was thick with anticipation, and I could feel the familiar thrill of a new experience coursing through my veins. As a former professional surfer, I’ve always been drawn to the ocean, but today, I was trading my surfboard for an ATV. The ATV Adventure promised a unique blend of Dominican nature and culture, and I was eager to dive in.

Our group was small, just four of us plus our guide and a photographer. We were quickly whisked away in the back of a truck, a fun and breezy ride that set the tone for the day. Arriving at the ATV base, we were greeted with a quick safety briefing and handed our gear. The ATVs were 300cc, not the most powerful machines, but perfect for a leisurely exploration of the countryside. As someone who’s spent countless hours riding waves, the slower pace was a welcome change, allowing me to soak in the vibrant surroundings.

Through Villages and Jungles

Our journey began in the quaint village of Maimon, where the locals greeted us with warm smiles and waves. The trail led us through lush jungles, the air filled with the earthy scent of damp foliage. The previous night’s rain had left behind a series of puddles, and I couldn’t resist the temptation to splash through them, mud flying in every direction. It was a liberating experience, reminiscent of the carefree days spent surfing in the rain.

As we continued, the landscape shifted from dense jungle to open backcountry roads. The scenery was breathtaking, with rolling hills and distant mountains painting a picturesque backdrop. We made a stop at a small souvenir shop, a charming little place filled with local crafts. While some items were pricier than expected, the experience of browsing through handmade treasures was delightful.

Beach Bliss and Cigar Stops

The highlight of the tour was undoubtedly the stop at a local beach. The sun was high in the sky, casting a golden glow over the turquoise waters. I couldn’t resist the call of the ocean, and soon found myself diving into the refreshing waves. It was a moment of pure bliss, a reminder of why I fell in love with the Caribbean in the first place.

Before heading back, we visited a quaint cigar rolling shack, where we learned about the art of cigar making. The rich aroma of tobacco filled the air as we sampled organic hot chocolate and coffee, a perfect way to end the adventure. With mud-splattered clothes and a heart full of memories, we returned to the ATV base, where a cold beer awaited us at the bar.

Reflecting on the day, I realized that the ATV Adventure was more than just a tour; it was an immersion into the heart of the Dominican Republic. From the vibrant culture to the stunning landscapes, every moment was a testament to the island’s beauty.
