Monkey Mischief and Cultural Marvels in Puerto Plata
When I heard about the chance to feed squirrel monkeys in the Dominican jungle, I knew I had to experience it for myself. What I discovered was a journey that went beyond monkeys, offering a deep dive into the island’s culture and history.
A Journey Through the Dominican Countryside
The adventure began the moment I hopped onto the open-air safari truck, greeted by the vibrant Flower, our tour guide, and Diego, our skilled driver. Their enthusiasm was infectious, setting the tone for what would be an unforgettable day. As we cruised through the Dominican countryside, Flower regaled us with tales of the island’s history, from the filming of Jurassic Park to stories of revolutionaries who shaped the nation. Each neighborhood we passed had its own story, and Flower was more than happy to share them all, answering any questions that popped up along the way.
The ride itself was a sensory delight, with the warm Caribbean breeze on my face and the lush landscape rolling by. It was a reminder of why I love island life so much—the perfect blend of adventure and relaxation. As we approached Monkeyland, the anticipation in the air was palpable. I couldn’t wait to meet the stars of the show: the squirrel monkeys.
Up Close with Squirrel Monkeys
Stepping into Monkeyland was like entering another world. After a quick tutorial on how to interact with the monkeys, we were led into their enclosure. It was an hour of pure joy, surrounded by about 25 squirrel monkeys, including a beautiful mama with her baby clinging to her back. These cheeky little creatures were everywhere—on my lap, my head, my arms—eagerly accepting the fruit and nuts we offered.
The bond between the monkeys and their handlers was evident, a testament to the care and love they receive. It was heartwarming to see these animals so happy and well-treated. As a nature enthusiast, this experience was a dream come true. I snapped countless photos and videos, capturing memories that would last a lifetime.
Discovering Dominican Culture
After our delightful monkey encounter, the tour continued with a visit to a typical Dominican house. It was a fascinating glimpse into the lives of the locals, who live without the modern conveniences many of us take for granted. We explored a garden brimming with mango, papaya, cinnamon, and more, learning about the various plants and their uses.
The highlight was the cook shack, where we crushed coffee beans and turned them into a delicious brew, and did the same with cocoa. We even sampled the local drink, Mama Juana, a concoction of rum, red wine, and honey soaked in tree bark and herbs. The flavors were as rich and vibrant as the culture itself.
Our final stop was an artist’s coop, where we watched artisans create beautiful carvings from petrified wood. It was a chance to support the local community and take home a piece of the island’s artistry. As we headed back on the bus, I reflected on the day’s adventures. This tour was more than just a fun day out; it was a journey into the heart of the Dominican Republic, offering a new perspective on life and the world around us.
