Great tour - We had a great time in Puerto Plata. It was interesting driving through the town and learning the culture. We made a stop at a handmade jewelry store and I got the best keepsake ever (the happy hour ring.) The tour guide made sure to take lots of photos for us. The ONLY concern we had was the tour guide spoke very little English. However…my husband spoke enough spanish to get by. We did ask for an English guide.

Best Tour Guides - Alfredo was amazing!! We booked him last minute when our cruise rerouted to avoid a storm. He took a great care of us, making sure we saw all the important sites, took amazing pictures of us, and took us the best local restaurants. I cannot say enough good things about him and the company! Great value and BETTER than what the cruise ship had to offer. Very customizable! 10/10 would recommend to all my friends and family

The best tour - Eddy our guide was wonderful! He was on time and He made sure we got to see all the sights and stopped at any stores we wanted to pop into to look at stuff. We ended our tour at the Beach and was able to order some delicious food. Eddy took lots of photos for us and sent them all over to me at the end of our tour. I would recommend using this company 10/10. No complaints!

Highly Recommended - Papito and Santos were the absolute best they made our trip fun and educational. We had a blast and I highly recommend. They showed us not only the tourist spots but told us about the culture and history.

Covered the basics - We did see the main sites listed and local provider was a very friendly and caring. Pick up easy and prompt at port taxi station. We were the only couple in the van that was clean and provided water. However, I requested English speaking guide and he was not. He had to pick up a friend to help. This was better but he only gave few details about sites which I had read on line itinerary. To his credit, he took pictures of us at varied stops. First stop was rum factory at 9:30 in morning then waited for other groups. This would be good for those wanting to taste the different rums which we did not. After several gift shop stops, I said we were not interested in more. We did our own tour at Fort. Although site admission was free, the actual Fort was not. It was very hot so I might prefer to do Fort, Cathedral early and skip the Rum. Also would have enjoyed some local interest info.

Crossed wires, and too many demands - So, we booked an English speaking city tour of Puerto Plata during out time in port. We arrive at the "Meet-up" location where no one knew of the "driver" that we were instructed to mention, after some confusion, someone was able to get in touch with them. Mind you this was booked as English speaking - the driver that showed up - quite apologetic, did not speak any English, but was quite friendly - we didn't mind as my wife spoke Spanish and agreed she'd interpret for me. Great lets go..... Nope the driver pulled out of the "secure" port area, and some other guy jumps into the car claiming he is going to be our guide and interpreter. First stop, Macroix Rum Factory - quick short presentation - total time at stop about 30 min if that - the tour was a video, a tasting flight (7 different rums) and rushed off to the store, our Guide kept telling us not to buy there, as it was over priced and he knew a better place to buy "Alcohol." Off we went, back alleyways - up into the mountain area over looking the port, first stop a view point - next to a roadside dump, with a Rep of Dominica Flag draped over a couple t-bar posts - but once you got past the view on the ground the view of the port, and the town below was beautiful. As we stepped away from the "Guide and driver" my wife mentioned the "Guide" was already asking about a tip - mind you this was less than 45 min into a 3hr tour. Back into the vehicle, down the road to a hole in the wall cigar factory (turned out to be about 5 guys sitting around a bench area rolling cigars) The head guy pushed and pushed until we bought a few of their cigars, and some "MamaJuana" (Local "Medicinal" Alcohol Drink) my wife was given a 2min demonstration on how to roll a cigar, and a keepsake one to take with her. "Guide" then took us around the corner of the block to pay for everything, into a shop with some way over priced jewelry, some of the Amber on display felt almost plastic even, not quite a comfy feel going on here. One thing that we both felt was a tad odd, it seemed that during the driving around - the "Guide" liked to point out where every single police station, and "Free Hotel" i.e. Jail, was located in the city. Off again - quick stop at the church, the town square, and off to the Fort for a quick picture stop. Quick stop for some local shopping - Umbrella street, Pink Alley, and the Chocolate/Coffee shop. Now let me tell you both the Coffee and the local Chocolate were AMAZING, wish we were able to bring back more of both. At our stop to see the Fort, my wife an I ventured a bit away from the "Guide" and she informed me that every time we stopped, or there was a lull in the conversation, the "Guide" kept mentioning his "Tip." Off now to the next stop - a bite to eat. We pull into this alley way, into what looks like someone's driveway, stop and both the driver and the guide are ushering us into what looks like a backdoor to a house - not a comfy feel at all - but turned out to be a very small restaurant..... our nerves were calmed when we were seated next to a huge group form another tour company. But the feeling of just not being comfortable never fully went away. Personally, I was getting a very "Serpent and the rainbow" vibe, but most of that stemmed from my wife's nerves. Now the food, it was authentic Dominican food, my wife enjoyed a full fried fish with red beans and rice, while I tucked into a plate of Chicharrons and Mofongo, must confess, it was amazing, however lunch was not quite all it seemed - the "Guide" continued to harass my wife for his "tip" through the whole meal - to the point that when she asked for some small bills from me, he overheard her, threw his arms up and stomped off. As she explained what he was doing, I agreed to half of what we were already planning on tipping him. Once we finished eating, and he finished his cigarette, my wife handed him the tip ($20) and he ushered us with some urgency back to the mini-van, where the guide and driver had a few tense words that neither of us understood, and we were informed we were heading back to port - we'd been out for about 3hrs, which is what was agreed upon during the booking, and we were both getting tired of dealing with the "Guide" so we were in agreement that it was time to return. As we approached the port, the driver pulled over on the side, outside of the security area, and the "Guide" jumped out with no more said, and walked away..... ODD??? As we were passing through the port security, the driver became quite apologetic, and asked for a "good" review, my wife explained to him that we would leave an honest review. (Yes we tipped the driver as we felt he deserved it and the "Guide" clearly wasn't going to share with him.) The "Driver" was quiet, aside from a few short responses to my wife's direct questions to him, mostly when the "Guide" was not around. He was pleasant, respectful, and considering how chaotic the traffic was, never made us feel that his driving would put us at risk. I give the driver an "B" overall. Now one big thing to note for other travelers - know what the exchange rate is, not all places have prices listed in USD, some as in the case of the restaurant, are listed in Dominican Peso (60.13 to $1 currently) When we were presented with our bill, it showed to be "2900" which ended up approximately $50.
