As a former professional surfer, I’ve always been drawn to the ocean’s call, but this time, I decided to swap my surfboard for a pair of walking shoes and dive into the cultural depths of Puerto Plata. The allure of exploring the Dominican Republic’s vibrant history and heritage was too tempting to resist. With a carefree spirit and a thirst for adventure, I embarked on the Puerto Plata Culture Tour to uncover the hidden gems of this Caribbean paradise.

Our journey began at the iconic Fortaleza San Felipe, a fortress that has stood guard over the city since 1567. As I walked through its ancient corridors, I could almost hear the echoes of pirates and buccaneers who once threatened these shores. The tour’s culinary highlight was at Parada La Playa, where I savored a local feast of rice, beans, fried chicken, and plantains.
