Into the Heart of Isabela Island

The moment I set foot on Isabela Island, I felt a surge of excitement. The air was thick with the scent of adventure, and the lush greenery whispered promises of untold stories waiting to be discovered. As a biologist and environmental activist, the opportunity to explore the volcanic wonders of this island was a dream come true. The Underground Adventure promised an experience unlike any other, and I was eager to delve into the mysteries of the earth.

Our journey began in Puerto Villamil, where we were greeted by our knowledgeable guide. The drive to the Triplets Volcano was filled with anticipation, as the landscape unfolded before us in a tapestry of vibrant colors and textures. The volcanic mountain range loomed in the distance, a testament to the raw power of nature. As we approached the site, I couldn’t help but marvel at the geological wonders that awaited us.

Descending into the Abyss

Standing at the edge of the Triplets Volcano, I felt a mix of awe and trepidation. The thought of rappelling 500 feet into the crater of an ancient volcano was both exhilarating and daunting. As I descended into the depths, the world above faded away, replaced by the cool embrace of the underground realm. The silence was profound, broken only by the occasional drip of water echoing through the chambers.

The interior of the volcano was a mesmerizing display of nature’s artistry. Intact quartz crystals glistened in the dim light, while petrified lichens clung to the walls, remnants of a time long past. A View from the Top

Walking around the edge of the Triplets, we were treated to a breathtaking panorama of the Galapagos Islands. The coastline stretched out before us, a stunning contrast to the rugged volcanic landscape.

From our vantage point, we could see the islands of Floreana, Santa Cruz, Isla Tortuga, and more, each one a unique gem in the archipelago. The sight of Darwin’s finches flitting about added a touch of life to the scene, a reminder of the delicate balance of nature that we must strive to protect.

As we made our way back to Puerto Villamil, I reflected on the day’s adventure.
