Setting Sail to Košljun Island

Our family adventure began in the charming town of Punat, where the vibrant red and white boat, “IVEX,” awaited us at the harbor. The anticipation was palpable as we boarded the taxi boat, ready to explore the historical and natural wonders of Košljun Island. The short eight-minute journey across the azure waters was a delightful prelude to the day ahead, with the gentle breeze and the rhythmic lapping of the waves setting a serene tone.

As we approached the island, the lush greenery of century-old holm oaks came into view, a testament to the island’s status as a protected forest park. The kids were thrilled, pointing out the different shades of green and the occasional bird flitting between the branches. It was a perfect opportunity to discuss the importance of conservation and the rich biodiversity that thrives in such environments. With 389 plant species and 151 mushroom species, Košljun Island is a living classroom, offering endless learning opportunities for curious minds.

A Walk Through Time and Nature

The perimeter of the islet, slightly larger than a thousand meters, offered a leisurely walk through lush vegetation. The kids enjoyed spotting various plant species, and we even stumbled upon a few mushrooms, much to their delight.

The island’s chapels, including the famous Nativity chapel first mentioned in 1651, provided a historical backdrop to our walk. The Way of the Cross, with its serene path, offered a moment of contemplation amidst the natural splendor. As we made our way back to the port, the kids were already planning their next adventure, inspired by the day’s discoveries.
