Into the Heart of Puracé: A Journey Through Time and Nature

The moment I set foot in Puracé National Natural Park, I felt as though I had stepped into a world where time stood still. The park, a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve since 1979, is a testament to the raw, untamed beauty of nature. As a biologist and environmental activist, I have always been drawn to places where the earth’s natural processes are on full display, and Puracé did not disappoint.

The park is a volcanic wonderland, its name derived from the Quechua language meaning “mountain of fire.” This fiery heritage is evident in the numerous sulfur springs that dot the landscape, their vibrant colors a stark contrast to the lush greenery surrounding them. The air is thick with the scent of sulfur, a reminder of the powerful forces at work beneath the earth’s surface.

As I trekked through the park, I was struck by the sheer diversity of its landscapes. From the towering peaks of the Coconucos volcanic chain to the serene beauty of the park’s 30 lagoons, each vista was more breathtaking than the last. The indigenous guides from the cabildo of Puracé shared stories of the land, their deep connection to it evident in every word. They spoke of “Jucas,” the mythical owner of snow and hail, who they say was scared away by the encroachment of modernity.

The Majesty of the Andean Condor

One of the highlights of my journey was the opportunity to witness the majestic Andean condor in its natural habitat. As I stood at the Mirador avistamiento del CONDOR, I felt a sense of awe and reverence for this magnificent creature. The condor, with its massive wingspan and graceful flight, is a symbol of freedom and resilience, qualities that resonate deeply with me as a conservationist.

The Valle de los Frailejones was another highlight of my visit to Puracé. These unique plants, which grow only one centimeter per year, are a testament to the resilience of life in extreme conditions. As I walked through the valley, I marveled at the frailejones’ ability to thrive in such a challenging environment.

The valley is a place of quiet beauty, its landscape shaped by the forces of nature over millennia. The frailejones, with their thick, woolly leaves, are perfectly adapted to the harsh conditions of the páramo, a high-altitude ecosystem found only in the Andes. Their presence is a reminder of the incredible diversity of life on our planet and the importance of protecting these fragile ecosystems.

As I made my way back through the park, I reflected on the experiences of the day. Puracé is a place of wonder and discovery, a reminder of the beauty and power of nature. It is a place that calls to the adventurer in all of us, inviting us to explore its hidden treasures and learn from its ancient wisdom. For me, it was a journey of the heart and soul, a chance to reconnect with the natural world and reaffirm my commitment to its preservation.
