Damro Labookellie Tea Centre and Tea Garden - The day tour from Kandy to Nuwara Eliya begins after guests have enjoyed their breakfast.
The journey leads to the enchanting tea region of Nuwara Eliya, a captivating city in the hill country of the Central Province. Nuwara Eliya is known as both the City of Lights and the City on the Plains. Located approximately 76 km from Kandy, the route offers numerous attractions.
• The first stop on the Kandy to Nuwara Eliya Day Tour is the Damro Labookellie Tea Centre and Tea Garden. This tea center is one of the estates encountered on the way to Nuwara Eliya. Previously called Mackwoods, it is the oldest tea center in Sri Lanka, spanning an impressive 5000 hectares of lush tea plantations. Visitors can learn about the distinct processes of black and white tea production. The factory tour is complimentary and concludes with a delightful tea tasting.
- Gregory Lake - Next, the tour proceeds directly to Nuwara Eliya city to explore Lake Gregory. Positioned at the southern edge of the town, the lake offers a tranquil atmosphere and picturesque views. Named after Sir William Gregory in 1873, it stands as a unique tourist attraction. Visitors can enjoy horse rides, boat rides, or leisurely strolls along the walkways. The lake park is also an excellent spot for a picnic.
• Another intriguing tourist attraction is the Nuwara Eliya post office, located in the city center. This post office is one of the oldest in Sri Lanka, housed in a Tudor-style two-story redbrick building with a clock spire, constructed by the British in 1894. The upper floor of the post office serves as tourist accommodation.
- Nuwara Eliya - The final stop before returning to Kandy is the Sita Amman Temple, situated in Sita Eliya, about ten minutes from Nuwara Eliya. It is the only Hindu temple in Sri Lanka dedicated to Princess Sita and is a significant Ramayana site. The soil in the area is black, believed to have been scorched by Lord Hanuman before leaving Sri Lanka. Lord Hanuman’s footprint is still visible in a nearby stream, making it a fascinating place to visit.
• Finally, the tour concludes as guests return to Kandy, completing the Kandy to Nuwara Eliya Day Tour.
