Dahshur: A royal necropolis situated in the desert on the west bank of the Nile, about 40 kilometers (25 miles) south of Cairo. Dahshur is renowned for its pyramids, two of which are among Egypt’s oldest, largest, and best-preserved, constructed between 2613–2589 BC. Building these pyramids was a crucial learning experience for the Egyptians, enabling them to evolve from step-sided to smooth-sided pyramids.
This is a remarkable site that is less frequented by tourists.
Saqqara: This was the necropolis for the ancient city of Memphis and the location of the first pyramids, built as tombs for kings. These pyramids featured six steps on the exterior, symbolizing the pharaoh’s stepladder to heaven.
