Kids dream come true! - Our tour guide Adel Hakem took us to ride the camels behind the Giza Pyramids. He found us the guide that spoke English and negotiated the rate and watched us take off and was standing right where we left him when we returned. This is something my kids (9 & 6) will remember forever! The camels are super fancy. If you want an authentic Egypt photo to hang up at home, this is where you want to go. You might even want to wear some Egyptian clothing. My husband and I have ridden camels before but this was the first time for the kids. The camel standing up and down is terrifying. The looser you keep your muscles, the easier the ride. But it is all worth it to ride a fancy camel in the Sahara Desert and see pyramids!! AMAZING!! Our family of four ride two camels. Ali lead the camels through the desert. One camel was hooked to the back of the other. We were a real camel train! My youngest daughter got to hold the rope and steer the camels for a good portion of the trip. Ali taught her how to control speed and direction. The kids could have spent the entire day riding camels around the pyramids. It was a bit pricy for the ride ($80 for all) but the experience and the pictures are more than worth it. I just can’t wait for my kids to return to school and talk about riding camels through the Sahara Desert. Ali carried our camera and took many pictures of us riding the camels and posed in front of the pyramids. You will want to give your camera to him — I don’t know if I could have survived riding a camel, holding on to one kid, and taking pictures. Ali was cracking jokes the whole time and talking with adults and kids about camels and pyramids and regular life in Egypt. At the turn around point there is a man selling sodas. He will open it and give it to you and then ask for money. About $2 per soda. They were glass Coke bottles but everything was written in Arabic — cool souvenir for the kids! Pack ibuprofen for the adults because at the end of the day I sure do feel like I rode a camel. But I would do it all over again tomorrow!!!! There are port-a-potty style bathrooms here that you pay to use. Do not recommend.
