Al-Azhar Mosque (romanized: al-Jāmiʿ al-ʾAzhar, meaning ‘The Resplendent Congregational Mosque’), commonly known in Egypt as al-Azhar, is a significant mosque in Islamic Cairo. Commissioned by Al-Mu’izz li-Din Allah of the Fatimid dynasty for the newly established capital in 970, its name is believed to come from az-Zahrāʾ (‘the shining one’), a title for Fatimah. It was the first mosque built in Cairo.
- Al-Hussein Mosque - The (Sayyidna)-Hussein Mosque (Egyptian Arabic: جامع سيدنا الحسين) is a mosque and mausoleum initially constructed in 1154 and later rebuilt in 1874. Located near the Khan El-Khalili bazaar in Cairo’s Al-Hussain area, it is one of Egypt’s holiest Islamic sites, named after Prophet Muhammad’s grandson, Hussain ibn Ali. Some Shia Muslims believe Hussain’s head is buried at the mosque’s mausoleum, which retains elements of Fatimid architecture.
- Mosque and Madrasa of Sultan Hassan - Situated in Cairo’s historic district, the Mosque-Madrassa of Sultan Hassan is a monumental mosque and madrassa built between 1356 and 1363 during the Bahri Mamluk period, commissioned by Sultan an-Nasir Hasan. Known for its massive size and innovative architecture, it remains one of Cairo’s most impressive historic monuments.
- Cairo Citadel - The Citadel of Cairo, also known as the Citadel of Saladin, is a medieval Islamic fortification built by Salah ad-Din (Saladin) and further developed by later Egyptian rulers. Serving as Egypt’s seat of government and the residence of its rulers for nearly 700 years (13th-19th centuries), it occupies a strategic location on the Mokattam hills, overlooking Cairo. Once among the most ambitious military fortifications of its time, it is now a preserved historic site with mosques and museums.
- Mosque of Amr Ibn Al-As - The Mosque of Amr ibn al-As (Arabic: جامع عمرو بن العاص), also known as the Mosque of Amr, was originally built in 641–642 AD as the center of Egypt’s newly founded capital, Fustat. It was the first mosque built in Egypt and Africa. Although the original structure no longer exists due to extensive reconstruction, the rebuilt mosque remains a prominent landmark in Old Cairo. It is an active mosque with a devout congregation and is open to visitors and tourists when prayers are not in session.
- Mosque of Muhammad Ali - The Mohamed Ali Mosque, also known as the Alabaster Mosque due to its alabaster-covered outer walls, is considered one of Cairo’s most beautiful mosques.
- Al Rifai Mosque - Located opposite the Mosque-Madrassa of Sultan Hassan, the Al-Rifa’i Mosque was designed to complement the older structure. Part of a 19th-century campaign by Egypt’s rulers to associate themselves with the glory of earlier Islamic periods and modernize the city, it is another significant mosque.
