Highlights
  • Gobustan Rock Art - Your tour begins with a car picking you up from your hotel. The first stop is Gobustan, an archaeological monument located 56 km from Baku. Discovered between 1939 and 1940, the site features over 3,500 human and animal paintings and various petroglyphs, along with 20 identified suburban shelters. The reserve primarily showcases Mesolithic (medieval stone) monuments. You’ll find numerous caves, springs, and carvings made by primitive humans on cave walls, rocks, and stone lumps. The tour starts at the Gobustan Museum for a historical overview, followed by a car ride to Rock Mountain to see the actual carvings. Afterward, you’ll visit the Mud.
  • Mud Volcanoes - The tour continues to the Mud Volcanoes, where transportation switches to Soviet Lada cars. You may bring strong plastic bags to collect some of the mud, reputed to be beneficial for the skin. After spending 10 minutes around the volcanoes, you’ll be transferred back to your car. On the way back to the hotel, you’ll also visit the Bibiheybet Mosque, known for its stunning green interior, and the First Industrial Oil Well, operational since 1846.
  • Bibi-Heybat Mosque - The Bibiheybat Mosque, built in a classic oriental style, features white marble and dome-colored glass. The mosque’s interior includes a glass mosaic inscribed with Surat al-Nisa from the Qur’an. Standing 5 meters high, the mosque can accommodate around 3,000 people at once.

An excellent tour on a hot day - We went to the Gobustan petroglyphs, and enjoyed it thoroughly. (The museum tour was a bit long for the kids, and we probably could have self guided that part and enjoyed it more—no fault of the tour, that guide worked at the museum) The mud volcanos were great, but for me the highlights were a change to the schedule to stop at a beach to wade into the Caspian, and go to lunch. (It wasn’t included with the tour, so this was at our expense) We and our guide, Ilkin, ate way too many kebabs and pilaf.

Other worldly - I enjoyed the trip to Gobustan - around 40 miles from Baku. I was transported to another world. There were many rock carvings and petroglyphs depicting people, animals etc...dating back to 5,000 - 20,000 years. There was also a natural musical stone called Gaval Dash. You touch the stone with a small stone for musical sounds. It is supposed to sound somewhat like a tambourine- although this was not the case when I tried it.

Lovely day!!! - We took a gobustan trip from morning 10:00 AM. Firstly, we get the all informations by Fuad inside of the museum, after this drove just for 3-4 minutes up to Rock mountains to see the real pictures. It was cold day for us but, tour was fantastic.

Gobustan Tour - We visited with friends and guide Elnara to enclosed museum befor going to rock mountain in open air. The museum has excellent displays of artifacts which include jewellery, pottery, arrow heads and other examples of pre-history. It was good to know the first message from the museum and Elnara explained the all one by one to us. It was great. In open air-museum you can see the all rock paintings.

Interesting, good fun and a great guide - Well organized with pick up from our address. Fuad is a great guide - knowledgeable and helpful. We particularly enjoyed the rock paintings from old times and the mud volcanos - the off-road drive to the volcanos in old Soviet ladas was great fun. I’ll never say anything negative about lada cars after this trip…
