• Diri Baba Mausoleum - On the route from Baku to Shamakhi lies Maraza village, renowned for its distinctive monument - the two-story mausoleum-mosque from the 15th century known as Diri-Baba, situated opposite the ancient cemetery. For many years, locals have preserved the legend that the incorruptible Saint Diri-Baba was laid to rest here. Numerous other legends and mystical elements are associated with this site. Consequently, since the 17th century, it has drawn pilgrims and curious visitors alike. The uniqueness of this structure lies in the architect’s design, which “integrated” the tomb into the rock, creating the illusion that it is suspended in mid-air.
• Juma Mosque - Shamakhi’s most prominent landmark is the Juma Mosque, one of Azerbaijan’s largest and most opulent places of worship. Although the current building was reconstructed in 2013, the original was established in 743 AD, making it the second oldest mosque in the Caucasus and the oldest in Azerbaijan. Over the years, it has been destroyed and rebuilt multiple times, notably during the catastrophic earthquake that devastated Shamakhi in 1859 and later due to inter-ethnic conflicts in 1918. Beyond exploring its historical and religious importance, visitors can simply revel in the site’s beauty and serenity.
