Highlights
  • Corona - We’ll begin our exploration in the pedestrian-only Corona Plaza, a vibrant hub for locals, and visit a quaint, family-owned Mexican bakery. Here, we’ll partake in the weekend tradition of selecting freshly baked sweet pastries and bread from expansive trays presented to patrons. Next, we’ll venture to a hidden gem where we’ll join local families for a robust Mexican brunch featuring succulently pit-roasted goat.
  • Jackson Heights - Continuing our gastronomic journey in Queens, we’ll traverse Roosevelt Avenue, which becomes a bustling marketplace of street vendors representing various Latin American countries on weekends. To indulge our craving for sweets, we’ll stop by an Argentine bakery for some authentic confections and pause for a “cholado,” a unique Colombian concoction that’s part icy dessert, part fruit salad. Our adventure concludes at a cozy bodega established by a Veracruz native, where we’ll celebrate with a (shrimp) cocktail. This final destination is situated at the crossroads of Jackson Heights and Elmhurst, two neighborhoods rich in immigrant culture and cuisine. They offer a glimpse into the extensive culinary treasures of Queens, hinting at the vast array of flavors we’ve yet to discover in our half-day exploration.

Additional Information

Corona is the culinary epicenter of New York’s Latin American community, a place where you can find regional specialties ranging all the way from the Tierra del Fuego up to Mexico’s northern border with the United States. On this tour of Corona’s culinary essentials, we hit the streets on a Saturday, when the griddles and grills in this already lively neighborhood are working overtime and the street vendors come out in full force. Starting at Corona Plaza, we will drop by a family-run Mexican bakery for sweet breakfast pastries. From there, we’ll continue to an out-of-the-way spot where we’ll sit down with neighborhood families to enjoy a hearty Mexican-style brunch of pit-roasted goat. We will continue along Roosevelt Avenue, stopping by street vendors, an Argentinean bakery and make a stop for a “cholado”. We’ll end our day at a small bodega. This last stop leaves us at the edge of Jackson Heights and Elmhurst, having tried what makes Queens such a culinary Promised Land.

Incredible culinary walking tour! - What a wonderful unique delicious informative fun day! Sierra was absolutely incredible and provided an extraordinary amount of culinary history as well as local history, architectural facts, cultural information, etc. I have lived in New York for 32 years and had never spent time in Corona or Jackson Heights and it was just the best way to spend a free day in our amazing city.

Fantastic food tour in Queens - I have done Culinary Backstreets food tours before which were exceptional, and this one did not disappoint! Our guide was a Queens local originally from Colombia with his own rich food heritage and a vast knowledge of the many food cultures that thrive in this fascinating part of New York. We ate from a number of local restaurants and food stalls, and we left feeling so full that we did not have to eat again for the rest of the day! Not only was the food fantastic but Esneider was an engaging person who was also very well organized and prepared for our tour. If you only have a few hours and would like to dip into the many and varied cuisines available in Queens, I would highly recommend this tour.
