Queenstown - The tour kicks off in the breathtaking city of Queenstown. As the journey begins, the guide will highlight and provide insights into some of the area’s most notable attractions.
Cardrona - Situated on the stunning Crown Range Road between Queenstown and Wānaka, the Cardrona Hotel is one of New Zealand’s oldest and most iconic establishments. Its rustic charm, spectacular mountain setting, and rich history make it a must-visit in Central Otago.
Wanaka - A stroll down to the lakeside offers the perfect opportunity for that iconic photo of the Wānaka Tree. Enjoy the beauty of this expansive lake, framed by Mt Aspiring and the Southern Alps—a paradise for photographers.
Lake Hawea - After crossing the mighty Clutha River, the journey continues westward past the stunning Lake Hāwea. A quick photo stop at a lookout point between Lake Wānaka and Lake Hāwea is included.
Thunder Creek Falls - A short 5-minute walk leads to a spectacular view of Thunder Creek Falls. This 28-metre waterfall, a remnant of a once-great glacier, cascades from a hanging valley.
The Hard Antler - A stop at the Hard Antler allows 45 minutes to enjoy lunch.
Ship Creek Walks - Heading north along the border where ancient rainforest meets the ocean, a stop at Ship Creek offers the chance to dig toes in the sand and feel the crash of the Tasman Sea waves. Explore the dunes via an easy 1km walking track.
Bruce Bay - Here, thick native rainforest meets the seemingly endless open ocean. Bruce Bay truly showcases the best of the West Coast!
Lake Matheson Walk - The journey continues to every photographer’s dream: Lake Matheson. On a calm day, Mt Cook is elegantly reflected across this picturesque lake. This 4.4km/90-minute easy walk offers breathtaking views of the Southern Alps.
Franz Josef - Passing many glacial rivers, the journey continues past Fox Glacier to the destination of Franz Josef. The guide will drop guests at any central accommodation in either Franz Josef or Fox Glacier. For those continuing to Christchurch the next day, the guide will pick them up from their hotel to carry on the journey.
Franz Josef to Christchurch via Hokitika
Franz Josef - Day two begins with a pickup from the accommodation in Franz Josef.
Lake Ianthe - Lake Ianthe is home to a diverse array of wetland birds, including the endangered Great Crested Grebe, which has one of the largest populations in New Zealand. The lake is situated in a glacial trough, surrounded by a moraine, and flows into the Wanganui River through Ianthe Creek. A brief stop here allows for those “wows” and “oooohs.”
Hokitika - Experience the laid-back atmosphere that evokes a sense of nostalgia upon arrival in Hokitika. Time is allowed for lunch and a stroll down Hokitika’s wild beach, where black sand meets the rugged coastline. The guides provide ample time to enjoy this “cool town” and a little teaser of what it has to offer.
Hokitika Gorge Walk - Hokitika Gorge is a treasured gem that consistently inspires awe, with its striking turquoise waters radiating an otherworldly beauty. Nestled amidst a lush canopy of native bush, this enchanting gorge is a magnet for nature enthusiasts and photographers, who flock to capture its unique essence and unforgettable vistas.
Greymouth - A quick stop at the Information Center. Located in the heart of New Zealand’s South Island, Greymouth is the largest town in the West Coast region, with a population of around 14,000 people. Nestled amidst chiseled cliff tops, wild beaches, and the picturesque Grey Valley, this charming destination is not only a beautiful spot itself but also a key hub for connecting via the renowned TranzAlpine train service.
Cobden Beach - Cobden is a beach break with a rock breakwater at its southern end, producing standout waves that break right up against the structure. This picturesque spot is a photographer’s paradise, with a stunning backdrop that’s sure to capture breathtaking images.
Otira Viaduct Lookout - Also known as Deaths Corner! The Otira Viaduct Lookout is an amazing spot to see the national park in all its glory. This bridge is the only reason driving Arthur’s Pass is possible! It’s huge at 440 meters long and is a great spot for a photo of the bridge and the surrounding landscape. A little bonus too, you might see a wee Cheeky Kea! The sneaky Alpine Parrot of NZ. The next adventure then begins towards the gorgeous village of Arthur’s Pass.
Arthur’s Pass Village - On the way through, the beautiful backdrop of the majestic Southern Alps can be seen up close. Upon arrival, there is an opportunity to either walk the Devils Punch Bowl or spend time around the local shop.
Devils Punchbowl Walking Track - There is an option to complete the 1-hour walking track, with a gradual incline including steps towards a ferocious 131-meter-tall waterfall. Fitness is low to moderate as the walk goes through the bush and forest.
Castle Hill - Weathered limestone rocks sit proudly on the tussocky hills and were once in the ocean! Over time they eroded away and started forming the amazing unique shapes seen today. This landscape might be recognized from movies such as Lord of the Rings and Narnia! That’s right. Not only that, but while walking amongst the rocks, climbers and boulderers can also be seen! This place is a magnet for thrill-seekers. This is not a guided walk, so there is time to explore this piece of beauty independently.
Lake Lyndon - Lake Lyndon, located near Porters Pass, is a popular spot for rainbow trout fishing due to its thriving population. The lake is nestled within the Korowai/Torlesse Tussocklands Park and is fed by the Acheron River, which flows into the Rakaia River.
Christchurch - The final stretch towards the vibrant city offers a unique blend of history, culture, and architecture, ranging from ancient landmarks to modern marvels. Its thriving art scene provides endless opportunities for culture seekers. Meanwhile, the laidback lifestyle and stunning natural surroundings make it a paradise for nature lovers, offering a tranquil escape from the hustle and bustle of modern city life. The guide will drop guests at their accommodation as they continue their journey in New Zealand. With new friends and memories, this full-packed day is sure to leave everyone wanting more.
