- National Palace of Queluz - The Queluz National Palace is an 18th century palace, a reference of rococo and neoclassical architecture in Portugal. Built in 1747 by the future D. Pedro III, husband of Queen D. Maria I, it was conceived as a summer residence, becoming a privileged leisure space for the royal family. It served as a discreet place of incarceration for Queen D. Maria I while her madness continued to worsen after D. Pedro’s death in 1786. After the fire that struck the Ajuda Palace in 1794, the Palace of Queluz became official residence of the Portuguese Prince Regent, the future D. João VI, and his family. It remained that way until the royal family fled to Brazil in 1807 due to the French invasion of Portugal. Apparatus spaces and private rooms follow one another in connection with the gardens, an integral part of this playful experience.
