A wonderful evening spent with Karla The Great learning about and cooking with spices! - My mom and I had an absolutely wonderful tour guided by Karla A. When we arrived she found out we love birds and on our way to the spice tour site she took us out of the way too show us a Great Potoo baby and a Double-toothed kite hunting near a troop of squirrel monkeys! We were beyond thrilled before the spice part even began! When we arrived we were shown the differences between roasted and unroasted cacao and coffee beans, and then we ground them up and made chocolate bars and chocolate cookies. Karla then led us on a tour of the nearby spice plantation. She showed us Vanilla orchids, Coffee, chocolate, cinnamon, cilantro, Palm oil palms, pepper, and many others! She was very knowledgeable about the plants and their uses and talked a lot about her personal history growing up around them. She also birded with us on the plantation and we saw a lot of cool species! When we returned to the kitchen the cookies were finished baking and the chef who had assisted us (I'm sorry I forgot her name, but she was lovely as well) had made my mother, Karla, and I an absolutely delicious dinner! I can't say enough how wonderful Karla was as a guide and as a person to spend time with. She had so many wonderful stories and we could have spent hours longer simply chatting with her and walking around the grounds. We missed her the next day! I highly recommend this tour and any tour she leads! I feel so lucky to have found this tour because I was really interested in Vanilla and googled "vanilla tour" and basically booked the first thing I found.

Exciting and fun! - Our tour was with Karla and Stephanie. They were both very helpful, very nice and welcoming. It was such a great day and Karla told us so much about the gardens and how everything is done. It was really exciting to learn so much. Stephanie is an amazing cook, her food was absolutely delicious. I would not change a single thing, our experience was just delightful. Pura Vida!

Great tour with Karla - We had an afternoon free in Costa Rica and decided to add on this tour to do something different. Karla was our tour guide. She was wonderful and gave us a very informative tour. My family of four was the only one on the farm that afternoon so we got a very personalized tour. We learned so much that we didn't know about vanilla, coffee, chocolate, cinnamon, and other spices. Now I understand why vanilla is expensive and how much work goes into chocolate production. Karla is so knowledgeable telling us all about Costa Rica history, wildlife, etc. The dinner they made us was fantastic and the kids enjoyed walking over to see the animals who lived on the farm (and they fell in love with the three dog residents). We only wish we could have had Karla be our tour guide for the Manual Antonio National Park tour because she does those also and we could tell that she knew so much more about the wildlife than the tour guide we got on that day. Thanks Karla!
