Our journey to the Ron Barceló Distillery was a breezy 35-45 minute ride from our hotel, Dreams La Romana. Upon arrival, we were greeted with a refreshing “Coctel de frutas,” a fruit cocktail that set the tone for the day. Our guide, Mr. Enoqui Molan, led us through the open cellars where the magic of rum aging happens. The aroma of the barrels was intoxicating, and I couldn’t help but imagine the stories each one held.

The tour took us through the heart of the distillery, where we witnessed the meticulous process of barrel repair. It’s an age-old craft that has stood the test of time, much like the waves I ride. The highlight was the bottling area, where we saw a special batch being prepared for Major League Baseball. The exclusivity of it all was thrilling, and I found myself wishing I could snag a bottle for myself.

Next, we ventured into the museum, a treasure trove of history and tradition. The timeline of the Barcelo Distillery unfolded before us, showcasing its significance to the region. The sight of the old cane presses and distillery equipment was a testament to the enduring legacy of rum making in the Dominican Republic. The tour concluded at a beautifully stocked bar, where we indulged in some of the finest rum the Dominican Republic has to offer. We couldn’t resist purchasing a few bottles to take home, including the Ron Barcelo Imperial Premium Blend and the Ron Barcelo Imperial Onyx. The Barcelo Creme was a delightful surprise, and my partner and I agreed it was the best creme we’ve ever tasted.
