Highlights
  • Fabrica de Bizcochos San Pedro - Known by some as ‘the cemetery biscuits’ due to its proximity to the local cemetery, this business has a 40-year tradition. Here, you can watch the preparation of sponge cakes and see them baked in a clay oven. The shop also offers sheet cheese, ball cheese, milk caramel, and blackberry syrup. Many people prefer these cakes for their unique wood-fired flavor. The journey from the meeting point to Cayambe takes about 1.5 hours.
  • Plaza De Los Ponchos Mercado - Since 1870, the Plaza de los Ponchos has been a communal space in Otavalo. The locals have preserved their textile and craft-making traditions for centuries, passed down through generations. It is one of the largest open-air markets in South America, featuring thousands of artisans, most of whom are from the Kichwa ethnic group. Saturdays are particularly significant due to the high number of visitors, both local and international, who come not only to buy goods but also to admire the indigenous attire of elegantly dressed women in embroidered blouses and anacos.
  • Cascada de Peguche - The Peguche waterfall, fed by the Jatunyacu River from San Pablo, is situated at 2,592 meters above sea level and features a 20-meter-high cascade within the Peguche Protective Forest. This beautiful site is both a ritual and spiritual place. On the night before the Inti Raymi Vespers, locals take a sacred bath in the waterfall to prepare spiritually for the festivities that last several days. It is considered a sacred place in Otavalo culture, reflecting the indigenous people’s deep connection with nature, especially mountains, water, and trees. This relationship is rich with meanings that have inspired stories, myths, legends, and rituals. The return trip from Peguche to the meeting point also takes about 1.5 hours.
