Chosen by chance it ended in a very nice experience! - We had a very nice experience and we have to thank our guide, Try, who was friendly, knowledgeable and professional. Try took us along the DMZ, the demilitarised zone on which France and Vietnam agreed to end the Indochina War. A buffer divides the country along the 17th parallel, ideally drawn with a white line on the Hien Luong Bridge. In crossing it, we move from yellow to blue, from north to south. The House of the Union replays images of United Nations representatives meeting to seek a solution to the conflict in Korea and Vietnam. It would be nice if that spirit could also be found today.... We continue to one of the most incredible things I have seen. The Vinh Moc tunnel was dug by the Vietnamese to protect themselves from American bombing. For two years men, women, and children lived underground in this almost 2 km-long tunnel. Men gathered, women cooked, and children were born. I had an attack of claustrophobia after only three meters. On the way back, we pass by expanses of pepper trees, maize fields, and rubber trees. The last stop is yet another evidence of the blanket destruction of people and buildings. The basilic of La Vang is a bombed-out skeleton, which remains there as a reminder of the havoc. Last but not least, Try was an excellent driver. The car was very clean and we felt safe during the entire trip.
