Saadian Tombs - Originally, the site only served as the garden of the Kasbah Mosque, but centuries before the Saadian reign (1549-1664) a number of emirs and the Merinid Sultan Abu l-Hasan were buried here. After the first Saadian sultan Mohammed ech-Cheikh was buried here, his son Abdallah al-Ghalib had a tomb built for him there and was later also buried here. The current mausoleums and enclosing walls were built in the late 16th century under Ahmad al-Mansur[2] and were then used for over 200 years until they were surrounded by high walls by the Alawid Sultan Mulai Ismail to commemorate the Saadian people - eradicate dynasty.
It was not until 1917 that the complex was accidentally rediscovered. Since then it has been continuously restored.
Bahia Palace - 19th century construction
Si Musa descended from a family of black slaves who served the Moroccan makhzen (royal government) and attained the highest offices in the country. [6] [7] He was first hajib (similar to a chamberlain), then grand vizier under Muhammad ibn Abd al-Rahman, who reigned from 1859 to 1873. He began construction of the palace in 1859 and continued through the 1860s. [1] [8] Today the “Grand Riad” or Great Riad Garden and its adjoining rooms in the northern part of the palace date from the time of Si Musa and are consequently also known as Dar Si Moussa. [3] [9] [10]The two large chambers on the east and west sides of the garden contain an inscription that dates their construction to 1866-67.
Ben Youssef Madrasa - The medersa was probably founded around 1340 by the Merinid sultan Abu l-Hasan (r. 1331-1351). However, large parts of its interior decoration date from the time of the Saadian dynasty residing in Marrakech (around 1570). Teaching stopped in 1960 and the building was opened to the public as a museum; in 1999 a thorough restoration took place.
Koutoubia Mosque - A first mosque was built by Sultan Almohade Abdelmoumen in 1148 after he conquered Marrakech. He will rebuild a second version of a similar size around 1158. This is the current version after the first one was demolished. Yacoub Al-Mansour will complete the construction of the minaret around 1195 [ 3 ] . The koutoubia is considered an important example of Almohad architecture and Moroccan mosque architecture in general [3]. The 77 meter high minaret is decorated with various geometric designs and topped with a spire and metal balls. It probably inspired other buildings like the Giralda in Seville and the Hassan Tower in Rabat, which were built at the same time soon after [ 4 ] , [ 5 ] , [ 6 ] , [ 7 ] . The minaret is also considered an urban landmark and an important symbol of Marrakech.
