Half day Rabat private tour - Very good trip, although a little pricey for a half day compared to the same taken in Casablanca. The guide was excellent and knew their history.

It started well, but went downhill from there. - It started off well, but went downhill from there. Our guide was very nice, and very kind to the children, but we were extremely disappointed after spending $260 on a half day tour (advertised as approx 3 hrs) for how little we actually did/saw. The tour started out great, we enjoyed Hassan Tower and the history about the Mausoleum, as per the description we were there about 40 min. Next we drove to the King’s Palace. Also interesting to see, but not as much information or history as we would have liked. This is where we realized that our guide had a very difficult time seeing- upon entering a somewhat dimly lit room, my husband had to guide him around, which explained a few instances previously where he pointed in the wrong direction toward a landmark or couldn’t understand something we were asking about on the drive. Unfortunately it just went downhill from there. Next we were told we were going to do a “drive by” of the “Roman Necropolis”, but upon our insistence he agreed we could walk up to the outside and take a picture at the gate. We didn’t realize at the time that this was Bab Chellah, because in the description we were supposed to go inside and walk around it, but all we were able to do was take a photo. He said we were not going to go in this place because there were stairs and it would be “too much walking for the kids”. We said, “no the kids would love that” but he just said “no, no” and started slowly walking towards the van. We had thought that the place we go inside must be a different location- so no big deal, but were incredibly disappointed when we realized what we had missed. So the description in the tour says 50 min and describes an amazing experience inside- we got 5-10 min to read the sign and take a photo OUTSIDE. Next we went to the Kasbah; which again, in the description online describes “breathtaking ocean views from the acropolis” and “Andalusian gardens…through a smaller door” and “charming cafe with a pleasant ocean view”…we saw NONE of that. We were takin through the gate, walked about 5 minutes to his “friend that sells juice” then walked us down an alley and back out the gate. Literally…we walked in a 10 minute circle. NO garden. NO ocean. NO cafe. Advertised as 50 minutes- our total time there…20 minutes max, half of which was waiting on juice that we felt pressured to buy, initially thinking it was going to be free…but what was lost in our understanding of his broken English was HE gets the free drink when he brings tourists. So that hits the four spots that were on the tour. At this point, we had been picked up at 9:30, met our tour guide at 9:50 and left the Kasbah at 11:40…FAR from a 3 hour tour. Halfway through the tour, my husband had asked if on the way back to our hotel, if he could drop us off at a shop where we could buy an inexpensive suitcase. At that point he said no problem and that he would help us get a good price. When we left the Kasbah at 11:40 we went over to the Medina on the same road and assumed the terrible tour could at least be redeemed if he helped us get the suitcase taken care of. It quickly became clear he had no idea what we were asking for when he took us to a leather shop with very expensive bags…then he talked to another guy who brought us a burlap sack. We then showed the shop owner the same Google-image photo of a generic plastic suitcase that we had shown our guide. The shop owner berated our guide and pointed us in the right direction. Upon which our guide then told us we would get a cheaper price without him, that his time was up (even though it wasn’t even noon yet), and told us “its customary for Americans to provide a tip” and put his hand out. We were so stunned we actually tipped him! If this tour was free, I could maybe say this was an okay use of our time. We got some history, and got to see some of the sights in Rabat. But having paid $260 AND even more so invested our final day of our week in Morocco, and only day in Rabat, I can only call this experience an incredible disappointment. There is no way to recapture our time there, to see everything that we missed. After writing all this down it seems more like a comedy of errors than the professional Viator experiences we have had in the past. The tour guide was nice, and funny with the kids…he just was not prepared or capable, due to sight and walking issues, that this tour was advertised as. We emailed requesting a refund or voucher for another experience somewhere else, though the opportunity in Rabat has been lost. No one has responded to our email request in over three weeks, so we are posting our review.
