Highlights
  • Spearfish Canyon Scenic Byway - Discover the stunning natural splendor of the Spearfish Canyon Scenic Byway as you journey along a winding road that weaves through towering limestone cliffs, waterfalls, and abundant wildlife. This 22-mile route is one of the most breathtaking drives in the Black Hills, offering panoramic views, historic landmarks, and scenic overlooks, making it a must-visit for any nature enthusiast.
  • Roughlock Falls State Nature Area - Nestled in a side canyon of Spearfish Canyon, Roughlock Falls is one of the Black Hills’ most picturesque and frequently photographed locations. Formed by Little Spearfish Creek, the water flows through a spectacular chasm before cascading off a 50-foot limestone ledge in a series of delicate waterfalls.

A popular destination for decades, the newly improved walkways provide easy access to this natural wonder. It is also one of the few places where visitors can spot the American Dipper, a rare bird that can walk and swim under the cool, flowing waters.

The area features shaded picnic facilities, restrooms, trails, catwalks, and beautifully designed viewing platforms. This is where the tour stops for a picnic lunch (included).

Awesome private Northern Black Hills and Deadwood tour! - We had a Fabulous tour with Charlie. He was amazing and very knowledgeable about the history of the area and the Lakota Indians. It was a perfect day with the windows and top wide open for a view. of the black hills area that we would have never known about. A picnic lunch was provided next to a small river leading to a beautiful water fall. Spearfish falls was another amazing sight to see in the Black Hills. Our final stop was Deadwood with lots of interesting history that Charlie shared with us.I wish we would have had another day to take in another part of South Dakota on another tour. Highly recommend this private tour company.

Awesome experience! - We can’t brag enough about how much we loved the tour! Charlie was our guide, and he was awesome! He was so knowledgeable and easy going. He provided a great picnic lunch at a beautiful spot. The open top Jeep is great! The views were spectacular! We have been to the Hill many times and thought we had seen most everything, but this was so relaxing to sit back and enjoy the beauty with so much better views than we have ever had! We would so much recommend anyone to try it! You won’t be disappointed!

Worth Every Penny! - Excellent experience thanks to Rich, the owner, and Mike, our expert tour guide and driver!! Worth every penny to see the amazing sights of Custer State Park and not have to stress over driving! Up close, yet safe, views of so many bison! Kids got to feed wild, yet friendly, burros at another stop. Amazing scenic views along Iron Mountain Road and Needles Hwy! Enjoyed picnic in secluded, beautiful location. Fascinating information that only true locals & experts in the area can provide. Very relaxed pace with private jeep tour! This was our 20th wedding anniversary gift to ourselves and it was totally worth it!! Mike kept us & two kids entertained and safe for a six hour day of pure fun! They pick you up and return you to your hotel. We cannot recommend Black Hills Open Top Tours more highly! 😊 We are not new to the Black Hills (our 3rd trip) and we wish we had done this sooner!

Jeep problems - Was told that Jeep would be ready to go Thursday morning. We got there and battery in Jeep was completely dead. Had to wait 2 hours before starting our tour while new battery was brought in for Jeep. On the plus side, Mike, our tour guide was excellent. You should appreciate his professionalism when he had to deal with a problem that the owner should have taken care of prior to tour.

Tour NOT as advertised - Most of the 'What to Expect' advertised at the Viator Glass-Top Mercedes Tour (Spearfish/Deadwood) website were NOT provided. We did not go to Moonshine Gulch Saloon; the advertised 2-hour visit to Deadwood took only 45 minutes; the Bridal Veil Falls advertised 10 min visit took only 1 min (bus briefly stopped for a quick view and we did not even leave the bus); the 10 min Nemo tour was only a direct drive through town with no stops. We were extremely disappointed. We would not have booked the tour if we had known the tour was much different from what is advertised.

Viator sucks! - I didn't get to go on this trip because your company didn't communicate with the people running the excursion. I had to get ahold of them and they took care of the situation. I will never use this site again 😒

Never use TripAdvisor - TripAdvisor never notified tour of our reservation even though we got confirmation notice from TripAdvisor. Call company and said there were never notified. Had problems with TripAdvisor before. Called TripAdvisor and they immediately refunded our money. They're comments were we sorry, end of conversation. This after waiting 1 and half hours at pick up point. This with two small children. Will never use TripAdvisor again.
