Presently, it is home to over 100 monks. It houses an ancient Coptic church, the final resting place of the saintly figure (St Anthony), and it boasts well-preserved medieval artworks. Its library is a repository of priceless historic manuscripts. Across from it, stands St. Paul’s Monastery, erected over the cave dwelling of Saint Paul, a Christian recluse of the 4th Century AD. He chose a austere life in the desert over the comforts of city life, dedicating his existence to honoring God. As per local legends, God nourished him by sending bread via ravens to stave off hunger, and post his death at 105 years of age, lions are believed to have dug his grave.
