The tour kicks off with a ferry ride from Ribander to Divar. Upon arrival at the Divar side, the guide and driver will welcome you. As you explore Divar, you’ll notice a vibrant array of houses, brightly painted in a style reminiscent of Portuguese times. Divar is the second largest of the seven islands located in the Mandovi River, with Charao Island being the largest. The island measures approximately 6 km in length and 3 km in width and is accessible via four ferry services. Although the Konkan railway line crosses the island, trains do not make stops here! With a modest population of just 5,000 residents, its charming atmosphere is sure to captivate you.
Begin by car to St Mathias Church, constructed in the late 16th century. Nearby, discover a hidden underground cave. Next, visit the remarkable Our Lady of Candelaria chapel, built on the site of an ancient temple, and a little further, the historic Saptakoteshwar temple tank. From here, proceed to the Naroa ferry to view the remnants of an old fort and the sacred Hindu bathing site known as Porne Tirth, where three rivers converge.
Afterwards, enjoy lunch in a traditional Portuguese house, with a stop at a local bakery to observe the making of local Pav (bread). If time allows, you may also have the opportunity to learn a Goan recipe from a local chef.
Post-lunch, visit the sluice gates to gain insight into the traditional Khazan system. Then, head to the main hill where Piedade Church is situated. In the church’s graveyard, the cemetery chapel displays remnants of the Ganesh temple. Piedade Church is one of the finest examples of Baroque architecture in Goa. On the return journey to the ferry, pause at the bird tree for a stunning view of the churches of Old Goa across the river.
Finally, board the boat and return to the mainland at the Ribandar-Divar Ferry point.
