Setting Sail to Divar Island

Our journey began at the Ribandar- Divar Ferry point, where the gentle hum of the ferry boat set the tone for a day of exploration and discovery. As we crossed the Mandovi River, the lush greenery of Divar Island came into view, promising a day filled with cultural richness and historical intrigue. The ferry ride itself was a delightful experience, offering a unique perspective of the surrounding landscape and a moment of tranquility before the day’s adventures.

Upon arrival, we were warmly greeted by our guide, whose passion for the island’s history was infectious. Our first stop was the St. Mathias Church, a stunning example of late 16th-century architecture. The church’s serene atmosphere and intricate design captivated both adults and children alike, providing a perfect introduction to the island’s rich cultural tapestry.

As we continued our exploration, we ventured to the Our Lady of Candelaria chapel, a site steeped in history and legend. Built on the grounds of an ancient temple, the chapel stands as a testament to the island’s diverse cultural influences. Nearby, the Saptakoteshwar temple tank offered a glimpse into the spiritual practices of the past, its waters reflecting the stories of generations.

After lunch, we explored the island’s unique Khazan system at the sluice gates, gaining insight into the traditional methods of water management that have sustained the island’s agriculture for centuries. Our final stop was the Piedade Church, a magnificent Baroque structure that offered breathtaking views of Old Goa across the river. As we made our way back to the ferry, the sight of the bird tree, teeming with life, served as a fitting end to a day filled with discovery and wonder.
