- Beartooth Highway - With audio guides providing commentary based on GPS location, travelers can tailor their own itinerary along the tour route to suit their interests and schedule.
Alternatively, trip planners offer suggestions for half, full, or multi-day itineraries.
Some of the many highlights include:
- Bears Tooth - This jagged, tooth-like rock, which inspired the name of this incredible drive and the entire mountain range, is a translation of the descriptive name given by the Crow People.
At an elevation of 11,915 feet, travelers will enjoy stunning views of it while driving between the West Summit Overlook and the top of some impressive switchbacks.
There isn’t a prominent sign, so guidance will be provided on the best spot to view the Bear’s Tooth.
- Clay Butte Fire Lookout Tower - The Clay Butte Lookout, home to a now inactive fire tower, offers some of the most expansive views. Access requires driving 3 miles on an unpaved but well-maintained spur road, suitable for most regular passenger vehicles.
A small visitor center, operated by volunteers, is open at the site in July and August.
- Island Lake - This stunning alpine lake serves as a starting point for numerous activities, including the most popular campground on the drive. If only one lake stop is made, this should be it.
Hiking trails at the lake allow for exploration as far as energy permits, offering pristine views. The Beartooth High Lakes Trail, which follows the lake’s western shore, is recommended. More adventurous backcountry enthusiasts also set out from this location.
Boating and fishing are allowed on the lake, and the Top of the World Resort offers canoes and other gear for rent.
- Rock Creek Vista - On a drive with breathtaking views at every turn, the Vista Point Observation Site is a noteworthy stop.
A short trail leads to a platform overlooking Rock Creek Valley, with its U-shaped canyon carved by ice that was once half a mile thick. This stop is not to be missed.
- Beartooth Pass - Every mountain drive has a highest point, and for the Beartooth, it’s at the West Summit Overlook, reaching 10,947 feet.
A short, unpaved road takes travelers a bit higher to ensure the best possible view. Even in summer, the weather and wind can be quite fierce, but it can also be pleasantly warm and calm. Be prepared for any conditions!
