- Old Town of Regensburg with Stadtamhof - Unesco World Heritage - Regensburg’s Old Town is a World Heritage Site. It is the largest medieval town north of the Alps and is beautifully preserved with over 1500 buildings that create this stunning cityscape. At the heart of this charming town is the Regensburger Dom, a grand cathedral that exemplifies Bavarian Gothic architecture. The cathedral is home to Die Regensburger Domspatzen, “The Regensburg Cathedral Sparrows,” a world-renowned liturgical boys’ choir once conducted by Georg Ratzinger, the older brother of Pope Benedict XVI.
Near the train station, just a few minutes from the tour’s starting point, we will pass by Schloss Thurn und Taxis, a city palace that originally served as the 13th-century abbey church of St. Emmeram before being converted into a city palace. The Thurn und Taxis palace remains in the hands of this powerful ancient German family to this day, making it one of the few surviving examples of palaces still in use by nobility in Germany.
From there, we will walk straight into the old city, which offers great photo opportunities as we stroll through ancient alleyways on our way to the historic town hall, the cathedral, and the old stone bridge. Along the way, we’ll stop by souvenir shops and many cozy restaurants, taking in the scenery. The tour will conclude at the central station.
