A Journey Through Time in Evora

Our adventure began in the charming town of Evora, a place that seemed to whisper stories of its Roman past with every step we took. As a family, we were immediately drawn to the Cathedral of Evora. The climb to the rooftop was a bit of a challenge for my youngest, but the panoramic views of the city were a reward well worth the effort. The kids were fascinated by the Chapel of Bones, a macabre yet intriguing site that sparked a lot of questions and discussions about history and culture. It was a perfect blend of education and adventure, exactly what I aim for in our family travels.

Evora’s streets are lined with quaint shops and cafes, offering a delightful break for a quick snack or a refreshing drink. The Roman ruins scattered throughout the town provided a tangible connection to the past, allowing us to imagine life in ancient times. Next, we journeyed to Monsaraz, a village that felt like stepping into a fairy tale. The cobblestone streets and whitewashed houses exuded a timeless charm that captivated us all. The highlight was undoubtedly the Monsaraz Castle, where we were treated to breathtaking views of the Alqueva Lake. The kids were thrilled to explore the castle grounds, pretending to be knights and princesses in a medieval world.

The wine tasting at Ervideira was a delightful pause in our day. While the children enjoyed some local grape juice, I savored the rich flavors of the region’s wines. It was a moment of relaxation and enjoyment, surrounded by the stunning landscape of Alentejo. The local shops offered unique souvenirs, and we couldn’t resist picking up a few mementos to remember our magical day.

Discovering Mourão’s Hidden Gems

Our final stop was Mourão, a village that seemed to be cradled by nature itself. The peaceful atmosphere was a welcome change of pace, and we took our time exploring the historic sites. The Mourão Castle and the Mother Church of Nossa Senhora das Candeias were highlights, each telling their own story of the region’s rich heritage.

Our guide, Hugo Oliveira, was exceptional. His knowledge and passion for the area were evident, and he had a wonderful way of engaging the children with stories and facts that brought the history to life. His connections with the locals added a personal touch to our experience, making us feel like we were part of the community, even if just for a day.
