- Hjálparfoss - Our journey begins at the gateway to Iceland’s highlands. Nestled in the shadow of the majestic Hekla volcano is the stunning Hjálparfoss Waterfall. Here, the Fossá and Þjórsá rivers cascade at a 45° angle into a shared lake, creating a magical setting surrounded by striking basalt columns. Just downstream, you can catch a glimpse of Búrfell, Iceland’s second-largest hydroelectric power station.
- Háifoss - A short distance upstream from Hjálparfoss lies another remarkable highland waterfall. The Fossá river plunges over 120 meters into a canyon, forming one of Iceland’s tallest waterfalls. The awe-inspiring view down the riverbed also reveals a second waterfall, Granni, adjacent to Háifoss. The vibrant layers of the canyon illustrate how past volcanic eruptions have shaped the highland landscape.
- Ljótipollur Lake - Known as Iceland’s most beautiful “ugly puddle,” this explosive crater was formed during an eruption several hundred years ago, showcasing nature’s incredible power. The diverse colors of this location make it an ideal photo spot. The red lava rock, green moss, and blue lake water create a striking contrast.
- Landmannalaugar - Landmannalaugar is one of the most renowned hiking areas in Iceland’s highlands. Here, embark on a 2-3 hour hike to explore the breathtaking landscape. Geothermal hot springs and various mineral deposits in the lava rocks create colorful mountains, offering an almost otherworldly scene. It feels like hiking on another planet. During the hike, many geological wonders of this enchanting place can be discovered. Remember to bring a swimsuit, as after the hike, you can unwind in one of the hot springs and enjoy the evening before returning to Reykjavik.
