Beautiful walk down into geo-history! - Great activity to get you a little bit off the beaten path. Be prepared to walk a little bit and be able to take stairs! We had some older members in our your tour that were not quite up to that and slowed us down. Helmets and crampons provided. Tour guide was excellent. Beautiful and VERY cold in the winter. We able easily able to do this the morning before our flight out that evening! Add it to the list!!

Laura was an excellent guide - This was my favorite part of our trip to Iceland!! Our guide Laura was so informative and seemed to genuinely enjoy talking with the guests and answering their questions. Before entering the tunnel, you put on a helmet and crampons. You enter through a small door with some steps to get down into the tunnel. The tunnel immediately impressed us as the interior had stunning views. Laura told us all about the history of the tunnel and how the once flowing lava formed the tunnel we saw today. Once we walked further into the tunnel, we stood at a platform to observe the area. On this platform, Laura had everyone turn their lights off so we could experience the completely pitch black tunnel (only for one minute so everyone could take in the natural sounds). The platform is as far as you can go on the guided tour unless you have an upgraded tour where you continue through the tunnel on unguided paths. You were able to view the path that was further along but had to turn around after viewing. Once you turned around to head back out, you were able to take as much time as you wanted to take pictures and view the cave. We loved our guide and she even showed us a small skeleton head with a helmet that they placed in the rocks at the beginning of the cave (look to your right when you enter into the rocks below you).

Lava tunnel tour - Great tour and tour guide! We explored the cave with provided gear to keep us safe. We learned about the history and shaping of the tunnel, and why certain things don’t live inside it!

The last part of the... - The last part of the tour, when the lights were off, that was amazing. Only sounds can be heard in the dark cannel. Feels so exciting.

Winter tour not for elderly - Packed snow and ice, with steep ups and downs, covered the entire path from reception into tunnel. "And it just gets worse further in," the guide said! One of us fell twice, even with a ski pole and crampons. Wasted money. Staff and guides very friendly and helpful. Probably great in warm weather, poor in winter especially for older folks.
