Exploring São Miguel’s Volcanic Wonders: A Family Adventure in the Azores
Eager to explore the volcanic wonders of São Miguel Island, I embarked on a family-friendly tour of Sete Cidades and Lagoa do Fogo. Join me as I share our unforgettable journey through breathtaking landscapes and rich Azorean traditions.
Discovering the Wonders of Sete Cidades
As a family travel writer, I am always on the lookout for experiences that are both educational and enjoyable for my children. Our recent adventure on the Full Day Tour to Sete Cidades and Lagoa do Fogo on São Miguel Island was a perfect blend of both. Our guide, Tiago, was a treasure trove of knowledge, sharing stories and insights about the Azorean culture that captivated both me and my kids.
Our journey began at the Arruda Pineapple Plantation, where we learned about the unique methods of growing pineapples in the Azores. The kids were fascinated by the process, and Tiago’s engaging explanations made it all the more interesting. From there, we headed to the Miradouro do Pico do Carvão, a viewpoint that offered breathtaking views of the island. The sight of the lush greenery and the vast ocean was a perfect backdrop for family photos.
The highlight of the morning was our visit to the Miradouro da Boca do Inferno. The short walk to the viewpoint was manageable even for my youngest, and the panoramic views of the Sete Cidades lakes were simply stunning. Tiago’s stories about the legends surrounding the lakes added a magical touch to the experience.
A Journey Through Azorean Traditions
After a delightful lunch in the city of Lagoa, we continued our exploration with a visit to the Ceramica Viera pottery factory. This stop was particularly exciting for my children, who were eager to see how traditional Azorean ceramics are made. Tiago’s explanations about the history and techniques used in pottery-making were both informative and engaging.
Our next stop was the Miradouro da Barrosa, where we were treated to another spectacular view, this time of the Lagoa do Fogo. The foggy peaks and the serene lake below created a mystical atmosphere that left us all in awe. Tiago’s knowledge of the local flora and fauna added depth to our understanding of the area’s natural beauty.
The Caldeira Velha Environmental Interpretation Centre was another highlight of the day. The kids loved exploring the natural park, and the option to take a dip in the thermal baths was a fun and relaxing way to end our visit. Although we chose to just explore the park this time, the idea of returning for a soak in the hot springs is definitely on our list for the future.
Embracing the Spirit of Ribeira Grande
Our final stop was the charming city of Ribeira Grande. Here, we visited the Licores Mulher de Capote, a liquor factory where we learned about the traditional methods of making local liqueurs. While the kids enjoyed sampling the non-alcoholic options, I indulged in a taste of the famous passion fruit liqueur.
Strolling through the city center, we admired the beautiful architecture and enjoyed the vibrant atmosphere. Tiago’s stories about the history and culture of Ribeira Grande brought the city to life, making it a memorable end to our day.
Reflecting on our adventure, I am grateful for the opportunity to explore the volcanic marvels of São Miguel Island with my family. The combination of stunning landscapes, rich cultural experiences, and the warmth of our guide, Tiago, made this tour an unforgettable experience. For families looking to immerse themselves in the beauty and traditions of the Azores, this tour is a must-do.
