- Postojna Cave - Postojna Cave, the queen of all caves, is the best-known cave in the world. It is also the greatest tourist attraction in Slovenia and one of the worldâs largest karst monuments. This is the only place in the world where the underground landscape can be traversed on an electric train and where you get to meet this underground kingdomâs most famous inhabitant
- the proteus (olm)
- up close. A fantastic web of tunnels, passages, galleries and halls, astonishing diversity of karst features, as well as easy access are certainly the main reasons for such popularity of the cave and a large number of visitors (more than 36 million of them in over 200 years).
- Predjama Castle - The Predjama Castle reigns over the surrounding area, not far from the Postojna Cave, in the idyllic village of Predjama. This picturesque, magnificent, defiant, mysterious and impregnable castle has been perched up in the middle of a vertical 123-meter high cliff for more than 800 years. Its romantic appeal is further emphasized by the idyllic Lokva River, which disappears into the underground world deep down below the castle. As the only preserved cave castle in Europe, the Predjama Castle offers a unique insight into the building techniques and resourcefulness of people in the Middle Ages, who were looking for and found a safe harbor for themselves right at the entrance into the cave. During a siege that took place in the 15th century, the castle provided a refuge for its best known and most notorious owner - Erazem of Predjama. The legend about the courageous robber baron Erazem, who remained undefeated until one of his servants betrayed him, is still in people’s minds, inspiring and alluring as ever. It was this safe abode of his which helped the brave knight resist the besiegers without much difficulty for more than a year.

Great tour! - Great tour! Our guide Ernie was great. I wish we had had more time in the castle—it was a fascinating place! I definitely recommend this tour. Only tip would be to get food whenever you can—there’s no time for a sit down lunch.

Cave and electric train - Ernest was a great guide, full of energy and sense of humor and information. Wish the description of the tour had mentioned the cold temperatures while touring in the train. Also, the description could include options to just tour by train and no walking. Reminded me of Krakow salt mines.

Caves and castle were amazing - Leave the dull cruise ship excursions on offer if stopping in Rijeka and make your way to these extraordinary caves and the beautiful castle in Slovenia. You won’t regret it. Driving there you see how beautiful Croatia and Slovenia is. Our first stop was the castle which we thought we had 2 hours at according to the itinerary but really only had an hour by the time they got tickets. This wasn’t enough time to explore the castle fully and seemed a bit rushed. Might have been due to it being a little unorganised getting us onto buses which might have got us to the castle later than planned. Then didn’t have time to get lunch to get down to the caves. Caves spectacular and the train ride in was cool. Fabulous day out. Highly recommend

Way cool caves - Really cool experience. Much more than we expected. Predjama Castle is a cool little spot to check out. But the highlight is the caves. Surreal is the best way to describe it. Make sure to bring a jacket or sweatshirt. It gets cool down in the caves. Well laid out and organized.
As for our guide, Dean, he was very professional and informative. He helped us navigate our way around pretty well.
The only issue was that the time got changed the night before and I didn't read the email until we were waiting on the dock from the cruise ship. It was a bit unorganized in the beginning, but once we got on the bus, all was good. The bus driver was awesome with some tight roads.
Slovenia is a gorgeous country and I will be back.

Easy visits to sites plus local knowledge that made for a better experience - Having a knowledgeable local take us to the castle and cave made for a more relaxing experience. So easy with the pick up at the house where we were staying. Dejan shared about Slovene culture and history and educated us on local restaurant styles. We most enjoyed the cave tour—fascinating.

Best part was the cave. Long bus ride. - We booked this excursion coming from NCL cruise into Rijeka Port. Due to not liking the options available from the cruise line, we found this very unique opportunity.
Although, I am rating this a 3, it does not mean it was not worth it - but felt there are some downsides worth mentioning.
Rijeka required us to tender, so we had to leave extra time to make the tour on time.
This is a 1.5 bus ride to the Castle/Cave and 1.5 hours back. 3 hours total on a bus.
You must be able to do steps and walk up steep hills to experience everything. Someone in our group had an injured knee which did not allow her to experience the best parts.
What we liked:
- Going into a new country - Slovania
- Postojna Cave (largest tourist cave in Europe)
- Comfortable air conditioned bus
- Tour company responsive via email communication
What we didn't like:
- Lack of clear communication on pick up time. It is not communicated on the ticket. People had different times depending on who they booked thru. We had to ask the tour company directly for the time.
- Organization to get on the bus was very messy creating lost time (standing in hot sun, moving us all around as they figure out the bus). Passing out tickets at the castle was also chaotic. At one point we had to pull over and wait for someone to drop off vouchers for the castle/cave.
- No food (with very limited time to get food) our bus had limited bottle available for $1 euro.
- Felt very rushed at the Castle (late Start + ticket distribution took Euro.
- Castle exterior built into the rock was beautiful, but the inside tour of the castle was unexciting to me. LOTS of steps.
