• Trsat Castle - Trsat Castle stands as a strategically placed lookout on a hill 138 meters above sea level, overlooking Rijeka. It was first mentioned as a parochial center in 1288. The site originally hosted a Liburnian observation post from prehistoric times, used to monitor the roads from the hinterland to the coast. The Romans later utilized this location to establish their defense system, known as the Liburnian limes, starting from the Tarsatica fortress town, which is now the site of Rijeka’s Old City.

The Frankopan dynasty from Krk fortified and expanded the castle, using it as a vantage point to protect their territories. Trsat remained under Frankopan control from the 13th to the 15th century before falling under Hapsburg rule. After an earthquake damaged the castle in 1750, Austrian field marshal Laval Nugent purchased and restored the ruins.
