Highlights

Day 1: Arrival – Tirana

Skanderbeg Square - Depending on your flight arrival, please send all information in advance. Our team will meet you at the airport, followed by a city tour of Tirana, including its central square “Skanderbeg Square”, main boulevard, governmental buildings, “Haxhi Et’hem Bey” Mosque, “Youth” Park, and the Grand Cathedral. Accommodation in Tirana. Dinner at the hotel or a local restaurant.

Day 2: Tirana – Kruja – Shkoder

Kruja Castle - Continue towards Kruja, the medieval capital of Albania. The drive to Kruja will take about 1 hour, traffic permitting. Here, we will visit the only Ottoman bazaar left from the Ottoman Empire and the Skanderbeg Museum.

Rozafa Castle - After the Kruja tour, we will visit Shkodra’s lake, the largest lake in the Balkans and all of Southern Europe (bordering Albania and Montenegro). We will fish for an hour in the lake and spend some time in the beautiful village of Shirok.

Accommodation in Shkoder city. Dinner at the hotel or a local restaurant.

Day 3: Shkodra – Durres -Divjake -Berat

Durres - After breakfast, depart towards the port city of Durres (facing the Adriatic coast), one of the oldest documented cities in Albania, dating back to the Illyrian period almost 2700 years ago (627 B.C). We will visit the city center, Roman Amphitheater, old Byzantium walls, and the Venetian Tower. Lunch will be served at a beautiful sea-view restaurant (we suggest a fish menu here, optional and not included; our guide will suggest the best options).

Divjake - Later, continue towards Divjake-Karavasta National Park. The park spans 222.3 square kilometers (22,230 ha) and features wetlands, salt marshes, coastal meadows, floodplains, woodlands, reed beds, forests, and estuaries. Due to the park’s significant bird and plant species, it is recognized as an important Bird and Plant Area of international importance.

Activities in Divjaka: Boat tour, trekking, bird watching, nature exploring.

Berat - In the afternoon, drive to Berat for a city tour. Visit the old town inside the castle with its amazing “Onufri” museum, one of the most beautiful museums of Icons in the Balkans. We will also visit the lower part of the town, including the area of Mangalem (another area under UNESCO protection).

After the tour, accommodation in Berat. Dinner at the hotel or a local restaurant.

Day 4: Berat – Tomorri Mountain (by jeep 4x4) - Berat

National Park Mount Tomori - Mount Tomorri is located in southern Albania, with an elevation of 2417 meters, and holds a special place in every Albanian’s heart. It is no coincidence that this is one of the best tours in Albania!

Day 5: Berat – Gjirokaster

Gjirokaster - After breakfast, continue towards Gjirokastra, another city under UNESCO protection, also known as the “Stone City” or the small gem of Albania. On the way, we will pass through the region of Tepelena and see some beautiful springs.

In Gjirokastra, we will visit a unique house owned by the “Skenduli” family. The house was built in the 18th century during the Ottoman Empire. A family member will show us the house and share their traditions.

Lunch is suggested at a local family’s home for a unique experience. They will cook traditional food for us, making it an amazing experience.

Overnight in a traditional guest house inside the UNESCO-protected area in Gjirokastra.

Day 6: Gjirokastra – Blue Eye Spring – Butrinti – Saranda

Saranda - After breakfast, depart towards the Blue Eye Spring, one of the largest springs in South Albania, a natural monument visited by hundreds of thousands of tourists each year.

Butrint National Park - Then continue towards the national park of Butrinti to visit the archaeological site within the unique park. Butrinti is under UNESCO protection and is one of the largest archaeological parks in the Balkans.

Optional: “Mussel tour” with lunch included.

Saranda - Albania Riviera - Vlora - Tirana

Llogara National Park - Later, we will continue through the Albanian Riviera (Ionian coast), passing through unique and beautiful landscapes. We will make some panoramic stops, including one inside the national park of Llogara, more than 1000m above sea level.

Vlora dates back to the 6th century B.C., when it was known as Aulona. Today, the most interesting sights in Vlora include the Independence Museum (in the headquarters building of the first government), the History Museum, and the Ethnographic Museum. Among the religious sites in Vlora, the most important is the Mosque of Muradie, built in 1542 by the chief architect of the Ottoman Empire, Mimar Sinan, who also constructed the famous Suleymaniye Mosque in Istanbul. Additionally, a prominent hill above the city is home to the Bektashi Tekke of Kuzum Babai, offering an amazing view of Vlora, the Karaburun peninsula, the island of Sazan, and the lagoon of Narta.

Accommodation will be in Tirana city.

Unacceptable Service from Balkan Pearls Tour Company; Alketa and Almar - I recently purchased a tour package from the Balkan Pearls Tour Company, particularly through Alketa and Almar. I was extremely disappointed with the level of service I received. The tour was scheduled on days when the museum and sites we were supposed to visit were closed, and the company failed to inform me of these closures beforehand. As a result, I was unable to view the artifacts and exhibits that I had paid to see. This not only wasted my time but also my money. I am extremely dissatisfied with the lack of communication and failure to provide the service that was advertised and paid for. I only requested half the money back for the tour package, but still received no explanation for why I was not informed of the museum closures before my trip, and also received no money back. The failure of the company to provide the service that was advertised and paid for is unacceptable and I would urge anyone considering purchasing a tour package from Balkan Pearls, Alketa or Almar, to think twice.
