Lack of communication - I’m waiting for my refund. They never contacted me with a time and when they finally called me back they said they had no slots available.

Calling this a surfing lesson is false advertising - Communication was awful, we received no emails, no texts about time or place. No instructions whatsoever. Finally the day of our lesson, after receiving no communication from the instructor I texted the contact number on the original receipt email at 6 am and asked about time and place. The responder (Angel) told me that the wave conditions were too small for surf lessons and that they would need to push the lesson back a day to noon the next day. I agreed to push the date back and Angel said he would be our instructor. The day of the lesson our time was pushed back yet again, supposedly due to wave conditions again. Also last minute we were informed that our instructor would be somebody completely different (brandon). We were agreeable, nature does what it will. We met our instructor and received our " private lesson" on the beach. This consisted of less than 10 minutes of instruction and was so basic it was painful. He had us practice standing up on the board twice and fake paddling twice. We were shown where to stand on the board. I assumed by how brief the beach lesson was that there would be more instruction once we got into the water, I was wrong. Our "lesson" consisted of brandon chatting with the other companies surf instructors and surfing himself. Occasionally he would wait for a wave and tell us to "paddle, paddle, paddle" and he would push the back of the board and when we inevitably fell off the board and got back up there were no tips. No advice on what to do to improve or what to change. He just socialized and was in the water with us, that was our "private lesson". My daughter began to drift away and he could see the concern on my face and he said "she is fine, we are all lifeguards so she is fine". The other instructor angel was constantly teaching his students, correcting their form, giving tips....... you know, teaching them to surf. I heard him say things like " you are dropping your head thats why you fell off". Our "instructor" surfed on his own and chuckled and chatted with the other instructors. The extent of his dialogue with me was "its hard huh? If you get tired we can quit" and "paddle, paddle, paddle". There was no instruction and definitely no lesson. I could no longer see my daughter and this idiot sees my panic and says "she is gone........". Probably the all time dumbest thing you can say to a concerned parent who can't see his child in the ocean. Then he says "she drifted way down the other side of the beach" to clarify. This genius then pushes me into another wave as if I wanted to just ignore the fact that my young daughter had drifted off and continue surfing. I was done at that point. I swam to shore and collected my daughter who was just as upset as I was. He did not care at all about my daughter drifting off, he was too busy socializing and surfing to instruct either of us. 45 minutes of that cost us $170, what an absolute rip off. When I met up with my daughter our "instructor" was already off the beach and dressed, ready to go home. No thanks for coming, how did you like it, no tips or advice. He was just done. Brandon can surf, that was about the only thing he did well aside from socializing. That does not mean he should be charging money to give lessons nor should he be ensuring the safety of young inexperienced kids when he obviously couldn't care less. My daughter is a swimmer, but neither of us have ever surfed before. That is why we booked private lessons for beginners. I wish I would have gone with a different company.
My assumption is that Angel double booked out of greed or due to a scheduling mistake and just assumed he could pass us off onto some guy he knows that can surf. Just because you can golf doesn't mean you should be a golf instructor, and brandon has no right charging anyone for his "lessons". We spent 2 weeks in Puerto Rico and traveled completely around the island and spent 3 days in Vieques. We did every tour imaginable and loved every single experience, except this one. IT SUCKED. BAD! Just the day before we booked a first time beginners scuba lesson on the same beach and were taught by a real instructor named Hayden with Great escape PR after Angel canceled our "surf lesson". Waves were actually pretty big, but Hayden was patient and went into great detail how to stay safe and what to do.
He was thorough and patient and was super concerned about safety and made sure we were informed and comfortable the entire time. We actually went wayyyy over in time bit he didn't rush us.
He truly loved what he was doing and taught us so much about diving. You could tell he was excited to share his knowledge and expertise with us and implored us to try to get certified in scuba. THAT is a teacher, THAT was a worthwhile experience.
Our "private surfing lesson" consisted of two beat up surfboards and some rude guy who was in the water us that you never would have known was our "instructor". Before she drifted away, my daughter frustrated asked me "when is he going to teach us what to do?". That sums up the experience. We could have saved a bunch of money and just watched a couple of youtube videos and rented 2 surfboards and done just as well. BUYER BEWARE, THIS WAS NOT A LESSON NOR ANYWHERE NEAR WORTH THE TIME OR MONEY. GO ELSEWHERE AMD SAVE YOUR HARD EARNED MONEY FOR SOMEONE WHO ACTUALLY EARNS IT.
